SKB Freedom Travel Case
Does anyone have experience or references for this gun case? I know that Tuffpack seems to have a huge following; but they also have a price to match. The SKB Freedom case hase the same golf club case look, lightweight, easy to carry and roll features. It also appears to be easier to lock and no straps to deal with. Feedback is appreciated for the SKB.

Hugh,

From what I've seen of them, they're pretty good, but I'd recommend you beef up the locks. I had a client earlier this year who had his 2 rifles vandalised somewhere between USA & RSA or RSA & Tanzania.........we fixed his rifles in the bush but nevertheless the bastard who did the damage shouldn't have been able to unlock the case in the first place.

I have two SKB cases....with, ironically, SKB guns in them.....(totally unrelated BTW) and for air travel I'll take the guns and put them in a thick soft case and put that in a Tuffpak.

The SKB case is a very fine case and IMO will care for the guns against handling abuse.......but I'll still put the guns in a Tuffpak for the trip.

I have a SKB 4 gun case, I've used it on 5 safaris and countless trips to Canada and western USA. My guns have always made the trips with flying colors.

The only complaint I have is the locks, it all started in Newark Airport last June, heading over to Zimbabwe.

Newark airport said I had to lock the case, (the year before they told me not to lock the case just put straps around the case). I didn't have a key, but one Delta employee had a key that worked, I had to let them lock it or the guns couldn't go on the plane. Now their locked up, and I don't have a key.
On arriving at Victoria falls, finding out my bags weren't there. the next morning my SKB case was at the airport. Picked it up, now, no key to open so customs could inspect them. It took me seconds, I mean seconds to pop the locks with two screwdrivers! I'm installing hasps before I go over next summer!

The cases are great, the locks are junk!

By the way, my guns were all perfect!

I saw the Freedom case after I bought my SKB two gun case or I probably would have bought it. It's not a TuffCase but with careful packing it would probably do the job. I just replaced the center eggcrate foam in the two gun case with clothes and managed to get quite a bit of stuff inside. If it weren't for the no ammo in the gun case rule I could have done the ten day trip to Africa with just the guncase and my carry on.

FWIW, The baggage gorilla managed to knock the side handle off of my case on the trip back from J'burg to Atlanta this spring. SKB cheerfully sent a replacement handle assembly that looks much stronger and stood up to a trip to Salt Lake City this fall.

The SKB locks are cheesy and I may try to add some type of padlocks before any future travel.

Rick,

Good idea, put better hasps on them, the cases are very good, the locks stink! (See my post above)
