MOZAMBIQUE PROSPECTS
Folks, lately I've seen quite a bit of positive literature and reports from Mozambique. I also personally spoke with a few PHs and outfitters while in Dallas last week and they all agreed that Moz is demostrating great potential, albeit the infrastructure is very poor.

A couple of months ago there was even a posting here depicting a great safari camp that was on or near the ocean if I remember correctly. Has anybody recently returned from there or are planning to go in the near future? Any information as to outfitters, PHs and hunts available there that includes buffalo and sable will be appreciated.

Also, if anybody can find (and post) the picture of that beach in Moz (and I believe there was another picture with a beautiful bar) would be appreciated. My wife loves the ebach and that would be a huge "selling point" Smiler jorge

Bruce Grant books for Jamie Wilson. You get a discount at the hotel if you book a hunt with him.

I guess this is where you hunt with Wilson. Lunwire

T. Carr was working on a report on an extended trip to Moz last year. He has not been around the forum of late but perhaps that report is still in the works.

Bahati works and hunts mainly in Mozambique and our hunting area is on the Indian ocean. It icludes about 30 miles of virgin beach. Fantastic to experience. I'll post some pics later today if I get a chance. People have seen elephants in the surf.

For game fishing and the "cocktails under the palm tree" experience, we mainly deal with coastal resorts and operators further south - in Vilanculos of Inhambane. Both have good airports and are easy to reach. Mozambique has a beautiful coastline.

For the hunting side, have a look at our web site and send me mail. I'll gladly help you with information.

What, no condos? No high rise Marriot hotels? No Mexican vendors selling T-shirts? I can't go there, there is toooo much beach....

Johan- Is it true that all those smaller rivers that parallel the Zambezi into the sea are infested with crocs? I have been to the Mahimba concession, then owned by Norwegains and that was certainly the case. I was curious if those crocs ventured out into the salt.

Here's one of those rivers in our area, just off the coast ...

Yes, there are lost of crocs in places. I dont know if they venture out in the sea. The big ones probably do. The great white sharks have been known to go up the Zambezi river though!

It takes about 24 hours for a croc living in freshwater to convert to saltwater..... during that time they become almost comatose.

Just after the floods hit Mozambique and surrounding areas a few years ago (99?) I did a 3 or 4 day helicopter game count along the Crocodile River bordering the KNP. There wasn't a single flatdog to be seen and the fundis all opinioned they'd all (ish) been swept out to sea..... a month or two later I did a similar count in the same area and they were all back again........ I've got some terrific pictures somewhere but can't find the damn things......

I'd think that you occationally get Zambezi (Bull) sharks a bit up the rivers you have pictured, or at least at their mouths where they meet the sea. I saw a few Zambezi sharks a bit further south when scuba diving out of Inhambane a few years ago.

D. Nelson
Jorge;

I hunted out of Mahimba Camp in August 2005. Terry Carr posted my report and some photos here under "D. Nelson's Mozambique Safari". Our camp was on the ocean, although you couldn't really see it directly from camp, but very near. However, it wasn't plush, so I am wondering if this is the same thing you are thinking about. I am a woman hunter, but if you wife doesn't hunt and is looking for a luxury lodge to stay in while you are out hunting, this one is definitely NOT it.

PM me if I can help answer any other questions.

Best regards, D. Nelson

Johan- Are those all mangroves in the photo? It looks almost impenatrable. Are there native fisherman on all of these rivers? Thanks.

Som fisherman here and there - on the coast mostly. The stuff is pretty thick, so we go in on the water. Here we are after a croc ... one of my favourite hunts.

and there it is ...

Note the growth on the sides. (These pics were taken on a similar, but different river) Give you an idea.

Very nice. While at Mahimba this was my favorite hunt. We would go in and out with the tide and try to skull up on crocs that were thermoregulating or asleep. It was amazing how in tune the big ones were to the birds. We ended up shooting some average one with bows. Nothing like that one in your photo. It was alot of fun to put the arrow in and watch the float that was attached to the croc.

jorge,
Mark Young has posted that Barry and Fred Duckworth are hunting Mozambique as well as Zim. Mark will correct if I'm wrong. They have been hunting there for at least 3 or 4 years. Mark mentioned their outfit when I was researching my first hunt back in 2003-4. The Duckworth's have a fantastic reputation, I don't think you go wrong hunting with them if they offer the hunt you are looking for.
