Tanzania: Wildlife Law 'Not Fair to Local Companies'
Peter Saramba
13 September 2011

Arusha — The government will amend the wildlife law apparently because it is not fair to local hunting companies which have merged with foreigners.

This was said over the weekend by the minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr Bernard Membe, when he talked to reporters. He said the law forces Tanzanians to have at least 25 per cent stake in foreign firms, but they are not assured of getting hunting blocks.

"We have practical examples as in the list of companies which have be given blocks announced recently by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. Some companies which entered into partnership with foreign ones have not been allocated hunting blocks," said Mr Membe.

He was responding to questions from journalists who queried if the new law, that seems to favour some foreign firms, will have any impact in the economic diplomacy policy pursued by Tanzania.

He said the government was working on the issue and in the near future it would announce a better system that would be beneficial to all parties involved.

Minister Membe said he had met with his Natural Resources and Tourism counterpart, Mr Ezekiel Maige, to see how they could deal with challenges that had emerged after the new law came into force.

"We need to be open on opportunities to Tanzanians in the changes we have introduced. It will be meaningless if they are locked out in their own country.

First they change the laws because they don't want us. Now they are changing them because they want us?? Confused bewildered

Word has it that TGT is losing areas to a company owned by indigenous people.

Companies like TGT should be encouraged, not discouraged, in Tanzania.

They spend a lot of money running a quality operation, they spend a lot of money for antipoaching operations.

Unlike quite a lot of other concession owners.

The simplist way for the government in Tanzania to solve most of the problems they have in the hunting industry there is by only allowing those who actually run their own hunting operations.

Rather than all the sub-leasing and sub-sub-leasing to politically connected individuals.

You are 100% correct. I think this will happen more often.

I have had this type of operator offer me hunts that were no doubt illegal. I passed.
