Ivory Tusk Value
Does anyone know what is the approximate value of African elephant tusks? I heard that the black market price doubled since 2011.

My impression is that it is illegal to sell them but does anyone know if it's legal to donate them to a museum?

If they're pre ban & can be proved to be so then you can sell them under very limited circumstances & there are very occasional auctions of such items.

If post ban, they cannot be traded but can be given or lent.

I am not so sure this is true in the US??

There is a fellow that regularly buys ivory for pistol grips from the Chicago area....maybe this is pre ban ivory??

If you are from US, why don't you call Lolli Bros Auctions and ask them for a reading on legality of ivory purchases.

I will also try to get a name and number for you in the next few days...after I ask the question of him!!

Cheers,

Lolli Bros will only auction pre ban ivory. The last time I was there was apx. 3 years ago. The ivory sold for apx. $120-140 lb. depending on the tusks. If I remember correct the tusks weighed 30-55 lbs. They used to have a place where you could see past sell prices on their website.

In South Africa

Ivory can be sold between parties but not for export,

on Large Ivory you can expect to pay $460 per KG,

these are very standard prices

I think you'll find that technically that only applies to pre ban ivory but there's plenty of that in Africa.

No Sir! A mutual friend of us (he who fixes Dickson's) had a asset of 110-pounders for sale with ALL the paperwork.

$ 460 a kilo?! Only if your dad is paying!

The lest said online, the better. Even if legal (which it is).

What is the "pre-ban" date?

I have a couple of feelers out here in US, may end up calling USF&W, I have a reliable contact there. I have asked John Jackson III, Conservation Force as well.
