Re: My 45-70 Buffalo Hunt
There is no reason why it can't be used on plains game if the ranges are short. Unless you practice a lot, it isn't a long range cartridge.

Rusty, Pay attention old friend. They were using the NEW and IMPROVED Guide gun with out the porting changed by Marlin this year for the Cowboy action crowd.

I only have one question. Were those the 896 gr super dense winged silver tip match kings ?

I was in Zimbabwe, hunting buffalo.

My companions where a fellow named Ray and a fellow named Walter.

We were all armed with 45-70's, that were carefully loaded with custom made Match King bullets.

After drinking alot of beer, we decided it was time to go hunting...

Quickly, we found ourselves in the midst of a buff herd.

We all started shooting...

Several buffs charged us, but our 45-70's with the custom match Kings dropped them all, with shots to the rump.

At the end of the day, we had about a dozen buff between us...

Walter asked for more beer. Ray wanted a nap...

We all agreed that there was no better cartridge for hunting Africa or the world, than the 45-70 loaded with Match Kings...

I try to take the 45-70 out twice a month and shoot 100 or so rounds at the gongs at 100, 150 and 200 yards off hand. The gongs are 8*8 and 10*10.
I'm practicing 350 grain slugs at the moment, using as much RL-7 as I can get in the case. The velocity is some where around 1,800 to 1,900, may even reach 2,000.
I've discovered that the tang site is a bit rough on the thumb knuckle so I'm getting a reciever site installed.
Once the reciever site is ready to shoot I'll switch over to using 445 grain slugs at the same velocity.
The 45-70 does have a rainbow like trajectory, relative to my 308 and 25-06, however the effect on the gongs by that big bullet is impressive.
Thanks your your reply.
