Good question.

I keep thinking about what would have happened if he had not killed her with the first shot. Not well thought out.

I wonder if he will get the death penalty?

The old eternal triangle, "Hang down your head Tom Dooley"
For Rudolph, hopefully the next line in the song lyrics proves true, " Poor boy your bound to die".

Scum should gets what he deserves.

Not sure who you are thinking of, but I am 100% certain the person you are referencing never won the Heisman.

Being a dentist means you know about teeth. Everything else is unknown. I come across doctors, lawyers, and people with all sorts of fancy certificates that are dumb as shit when it comes to everything outside of what is shown on that certificate.

Completely agree with your observations. Those individuals you speak of are also the same ones that seem to think that just because they do have that certificate, they are extremely knowledgeable about everything else as well.

A university degree does not create the vast knowledge base that comes with a natural interest in many things and the school of hard knocks. Smiler

Of course, he will appeal. No clue whether or not the appeal have any merit.

The one I don't get is the girlfriend. How in the hell did she get herself charged? Either someone did a poor job of preparing her to testify or they were so arrogant that they thought she needed no help.

As the old saying goes, if you wanna play you gotta pay. Sounds like both will be paying a big price for their activities.

It will be interesting to see what the sentences are.

The girlfriend conspired with Rudolph to murder his wife so that the girlfriend could then marry a wife-murderer.

She must have been operating under the theory that lightning will never strike the same place twice.

Too late for her to make a deal now, in any event.

This is the point.

I can never understand someone supporting another person to commit a crime for their benefit.

Couldn't they see that by creating a criminal, they could end up at the receiving end??

One thing you can count on here in CO.
There will be no execution.
Even if he gets the death penalty, he will die in solitary.
Might give him a few years to reconsider killing his wife for some stray pussy.

I'm betting he gets 35 years or life.
And she will get around 15-20 years.

Bill Martinez is a sorry son of a bitch for a judge.
Last job he had was a local Pueblo County judge.
Case I went in front of him, he had already made up his mind and wouldn't even listen to my side of the story.
Re: dau took advantage of her Dad when he got hurt.
At the time he had $1/4 mil. Survived broke, and broken health too.
She shut his business down and sold it for half mil.
No accounting for what she did with it all.
He told me he had real good health insurance.
I tried to help him get answers and got screwed too.

Saeed, Fairgame etc: Since you guys use a 12 ga with 00 for cats. Pull one down and weigh one pellet, I would but, don't have any. I would like to know what one weighs in grains.

Then, while you are out hunting for cat bait. Use one on a smaller animal at 2 or 3 feet and see if the shot exits. I haven't read anything about an exit on the lady. Knowing a 12ga is a hard shooter up close I would expect it would exit. From the pictures, at 5'4" she looks a bit heavier thru the body than Saeed. Around 8-9" thru the chest.
Shouldn't be too hard to find an antelope about that thick thru the ribs to check penetration. That would be a good test.
Just some random thoughts.

How a jury determined an “accident” on an African safari was murder

BY CBS News | September 7, 2022
Home › News › CBS News › National News

This story was originally published on April 15, 2022. It was updated on September 7, 2022.

Larry Rudolph, who ran a ran a multimillion dollar dental empire in Pittsburgh, and his wife Bianca, both skilled big game hunters, traveled to a favorite location — Kafue National Park in Zambia in 2016. No one would have imagined Bianca would never make it home, or that journey would end years later before a jury in a Denver federal court where they heard allegations of a cover-up, fraud, and an affair Dr. Rudolph had with his office manager, Lori Milliron.

CBS News correspondent Debora Patta, on assignment for “48 Hours,” explores this complex investigation in an encore presentation of “Death on Safari” airing Saturday, September 10, 2022 at 10/9c on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

Rudolph claims Bianca accidentally shot herself when the rifle she was loading into a case discharged. At the time, Zambian police ruled her death as an accident.

On August 1, 2022, jurors found Rudolph guilty of murdering his wife. He was convicted on one count of the murder of a U.S. national in a foreign country and one count of mail fraud, for cashing in more than $4.8 million in life insurance claims.

The jury also found his longtime lover Lori Milliron guilty on charges of being an accessory after the fact to the murder, obstruction of justice, and two counts of perjury before the grand jury.

According to police in Zambia, on the final day of their safari, October 11, Rudolph claimed Bianca was packing a gun in the bedroom of their cabin when he heard a shotgun blast from the bathroom. He said he found his wife bleeding, lying face up on the floor with a shotgun wound to the heart. Spencer Kakoma, a game scout on that safari, also heard the shot and says he ran to the cabin within 15 seconds.

Kakoma said he witnessed Bianca clearing the gun of live ammunition the night before. He says Rudolph first claimed Bianca died by suicide, shooting herself intentionally while he was in the bathroom. Later, Rudolph had a different version of events, no longer claiming it was a suicide, but instead saying Bianca accidentally shot herself while packing up the gun.

Things weren’t adding up for Kakoma. He says Rudolph was fully dressed when he rushed over to the cabin after hearing the gunshot. But local police say Rudolph told them he was wrapped in a towel.

Local authorities went to the scene and photographed the body, which was later moved to a funeral home to await cremation. A U.S. Embassy official decided to travel to the funeral home to investigate. Unbeknownst to Rudolph, the official, a former Marine with decades of weapons experience, inspected Bianca’s body, measuring the shotgun wound and taking photos.

That is where the story might have ended if it wasn’t for a friend of Bianca’s. According to an FBI criminal complaint, when the friend learned Bianca was cremated, it raised suspicions because she believed “cremation to have been against Bianca’s wishes because Bianca was a strict Catholic.”

The FBI complaint says Bianca’s friend told an FBI agent Rudolph had been having an extra marital affair and “had been verbally abusive in the past and that the two had fights about money.”

But in a document filed by Rudolph’s attorneys, they claim Bianca’s will “expressly directed cremation.” They also say Bianca knew about her husband’s affair, indicating it would not have been a motive for murder.

The friend also told the FBI agent, “Larry is never going to divorce her because he doesn’t want to lose his money and she’s never going to divorce him because of her Catholicism.”

“She opened up a Pandora’s box as to why Lawrence Rudolph would want to kill his wife,” says Mary Fulginiti, a former federal prosecutor and CBS News consultant.

Within a month of returning to the United States, the FBI says Rudolph started filing claims on his wife’s life insurance policies, worth almost $5 million.

Rudolph was arrested in December 2021, more than five years after Bianca’s death. At his trial Larry Rudolph denied shooting his wife for the insurance or to be with Lori Milliron

Rudolph’s attorneys declined to talk to “48 Hours” before the trial, but they provided the following statement:

“Dr. Rudolph is innocent. The Zambian authorities who were there and investigated said so. The insurance companies who paid the claim after they investigated said so. Strangely, five years later, the feds brought charges without any real evidence — no eye-witnesses, no forensics, no anything — except for some speculation sprinkled into a chasm of conjecture.”

Rudolph, who remains in custody, could face a maximum penalty of life in prison for the murder charge. The mail fraud charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.

Milliron remains free with an ankle monitor until the two are sentenced in February 2023.

I have had dealings with one of the prosecutors in this case (not as a defendant) and he is a very smart and thorough lawyer, I would have a hard time believing he would have made a mistake that could reverse this verdict.

He does not have to make a mistake. A piece of evidence or certain testimony that was admitted over objection could get reversed by the Circuit Court Appeals Court adopting a new rule that was not the rule of the Circuit when the Trial Judge ruled in favor of admission.

Rule 403 comes to mind. Is there not a “drunken confession” part of this?

I only identify the Prosecution does not have to make a mistake.

That said, I do not bet on a reversal. Assuming a long shot reversal, the Feds can still retry.

Of course, ruling on questions of law are reviewed under an abuse of discretion standard.

Unless an experienced attorney sat through the the entire case from start through post trial motions, there is absolutely no basis to say what the possibilities on appeal are.

Just because the vast majority of appeals from criminal conviction are upheld, doesn’t mean diddly as to whether the next case, like this one is also a loser too.

Do you know how many criminal appeals are baseless rolls of the dice by career criminals using their free public defender, because like a lottery ticket, you can’t win if you don’t play?

Maybe reading the appellate briefs might give someone a better idea what kind of appeal this is. Although that is no guarantee.
20 September 2022, 08:02
sdirks
I have been a prosecutor for thirty years. As such, I have had to read thousands of published appellate court opinions, most resulting from appealed convictions. I don’t know what the success rate is on appeal but I feel very confident in saying that it is way less than 1%.
And since the most common basis for appeal or postconviction motions is a claim of ineffective assistance of trial counsel, it is also nearly universal that a different attorney handles the appeal than the trial attorney.
