DoublegunJust curious...
Not planning a trip to Africa in the future but I was wondering how much ammo you take when you head over for a 2-week safari? I am sure the answer depends upon the caliber of rifles (common vs not) but say you are taking a .375 H&H and a .300 H&H?
Thanks for indulging my curiosity.

vapodogYou're only allowed to transport 11 pounds on the airplane. That is the restriction that overrules it all. If one's significant other is also going he/she can also take 11 pounds.
Take all you can and leave whatever is left over as an additional gratuity to your PH.....someone will be grateful for it and you won't be hasseled with ammo on the return trip.
It's not the answer you wanted....but it's the best I can offer.

NitroXSome countries have specific limits and also charge a tax for each bullet imported.
South Africa and Zimbabwe do not. Zambia and Tanzania?

Mike:
You will want to weigh your ammo carefully in case you are checked. IIRC I weighed 5 boxes of 300 grain .375 H&H and it weighed very close to 1 KG per box before a trip to RSA. I was never checked or asked but you never who you will get at TSA here or abroad.

577NitroExpressThere was a discussion on NitroExpress recently about taking the 11 lbs of ammo with you on safari.
NE450No2 filled his pelican case with helium and was able to get 25 lbs to weigh only 10 lbs!
