Bought my first Tilley Hat today
Well guys, I know this has nothing to do with Africa, but since I think it was here on this forum where I read the recommendation I thought I would post it here.

Going on Thursday to Vancouver for my 7 day alaskan cruise and needed a hat, so called up Tilley today and am getting one sent 2nd day so I have it Wednesday when I pack. I ordered the TH4, the one made of hemp in the larger of the brim sizes (redheads must stay out of the sun). I am real excited, the recommendations for this hat I read were so high that I can't wait to wear it. I measured my head where they said and I showed 7 5/8 for size, so after talking to the girl who said they run a bit small and should fit loose I ordered 7 7/8 Yes, I have a big noggin' full of useless information.

If this one works out I might buy a wool one for winter hunting.

Thanks for all the great info. you all share on here.

Are you talking about a hat?

I have a jock strap that is 7 7/8. Does Tilley make them too?

The Tilley is a great hat. I wore one (a LTM6) when in Namibia. Was on Doxycycline and wanted ear and face protection from the sun. See my Namibia photos posted today. A hat like that might even make Will look better.

I give up, what does a Tilley look like?

An Elephant can eat it and pass it 3 or 4 times with zero problems .

I got tired of all this chatter about the Tilley Hat so I looked it up on Yahoo. Enjoy the link, maybe I'll buy one.

Speaking of hats, I stopped by Filson in Seattle today and see that they have the Packer Hat with wool earmuffs and a quilt lining. Looks like a dandy for those cold, wet Winter days.

ott6--but I noticed that you only wore it 1/3 of the time. The hat you were wearing in 4/6 pictures is much more economical (free) and that type has worked well for me for the past 40 years--next 40 I reckon, too.

Enjoy your Tilley! They are great hats! Have a great cruise!

Yes, but that size comes only in hemp.

It's about a goofy looking thang!

Ever heard of John B. Stetson for goodness sake! or the famous baseball cap!

Don't care for Stetson's, and baseball caps don't give enough sun coverage. I have tried lots of different hats, the one I use around the yard is all right, but way too large, can't see anything eye level. Doesn't matter for weeding, but sucks for anything else.

Borrowed a hat last year from my uncle, wool felt, don't know what the style would be called.

sorry everyone that I didn't put "hat" in there, fixed that.

Talk about sticker shock! $63 for a Tilley T3 at Cabelas. I forget if I had to pay state sales tax on it or not. Just to have fun in the sun in Namibia.

I got mine from noggintops.com and absolutely love it -- but sticker price? OUCH!

gotogirl,

thanks for the link, I will have to check better next time (like if I get a wool one in the fall). I bought direct from Tilley Endurables this time, which in this case was probably a good idea, not only do they have the hemp one that I wanted (they had better being the manufacturer and all), but they knew that the hemp ones run smaller and were able to make sure that I bought the size that would fit. The lady also gave me a 10% discount, probably because she could tell from my voice how handsome I am! :-)

Arts- I brought both the Tilley and two AR ball caps. I would wear the Tilley through the hot part of day or while stalking and walking. I would switch hats for pictures so you guys could see the AR hats or wear them when the sun wasn't a big factor i.e. blinds, early morning, late evening.
