Cow eland and zebra, enough gun?
When I retire in a few years, I plan on my second trip to Africa. I don't have enough room to put up all my trophies now. On this trip, probably a Namibian ranch hunt, I want to shoot a cow eland and a Zebra as my first two choices. I have seen cow eland at the zoo and one of these in an European skull mount would make a fine trophy.
I am very comfortable with my FN 30-06 and really don't want to buy another gun just to take to Africa. I'd rather spend the money on my trip. I can load 200gn Partitions to 2600fps. If I keep my shots reasonable, 250yds or less, do I really need a heavier gun. BTW I'm taking my 7x57 with 150pts @2800 as my second rifle. capt david. troll

"It's not how hard you hit 'em, it's where you hit 'em." The 30-06 will, with the right bullet, successfully take any game animal in North America up to 300yds. Get closer!

That gun/bullet choice would work great. I'm going to be hunting in Namibia with my family for 21 days next year and I am planning on taking everything from Damara Dik-Dik and Klipspringer to a bull Eland and Mtn. Zebra. I'm going to be shooting everything with my .300 WSM using 180 gr. Barnes MRX. Your 30-06 with 200 gr. Partitions will work just fine. Good luck.

Yes, a .30-06 will be just fine. This is my bull taken with mere 165 grain softs. Yep, sporter Mauser, it's a very accurate rifle, built by my grandfather.

My wife shot a zebra with a 30-06 with the nosler partion. I did not take a step. It was a broadside shot with perfect placement. It was the PH's gun so I don't know bullet weight. we only found the back half. The barnes TSX or barnes A frame would be a better choice for eland or less than perfect shots on zebra.

Yes, you can do it. In no way would it be my gun of choice, though.

A .375, or better would be my gun of choice.

fine - as long as you can pick you broadside shot. if you have a bad angle however - you need a bit more rifle
