FjoldMedical Evac service, bug repellent, etc. Questions
OK, I'm going to hunt with Martin in the Omay in June and want to get everything set up.
Is MedJet still the preferred medical evac provider to get me to my home hospital if needed? I see that the price has gone up to $115 for two weeks coverage.
Bug spray, I'll be in the Omay the first half of June so are mosquitos and biting flies going to be bad then? Martin says Skin-so-Soft works well there but should I bring some DEET as well?
How about treating my clothes before I go, what should I use?
I have the necessary safari grooming/cleaning stuff like baby wipes, hand sanitizer, etc. Is there anything else anyone can think of to bring along?

LabmanThe stuff you use on your clothes is Permethin. I bought it at an REI store in my area. I've been to Zim (Doma area) in late May early June and the only bugs that gave us any problems were tetse flies, but that was only in certain areas. There was one valley we nicknamed "the valley of flies" that we often drove through. Other than that area, things were not that bad. DEET doesn't seem to work on tetse flies. I never tried the skin so soft, but it would be worth a try. I've heard they make a version with DEET which couldn't hurt.

crbutlerDuct tape, hydrocortisone cream, and allergy meds (claritin or zyrtec). Buffalo bean is NOT your friend.
Decent foot powder is a good idea when its hot as well.

Oday450Agree with Global Rescue as being the best. Care from the field back to a hospital in the US.
Your body chemistry and experience with fly repellent may be different from mine. I took both Ultra Thon and Skin So Soft Expedition and found that the Skin So Soft worked extremely well for both tsetse and mopane bees. The PH and Camp Manager's wife both wanted the left overs when the hunt was done. They said it was the only thing they had seen that worked for both. (Take a few extra - they will be appreciated.)

I had MedJet insurance for my nephew and I but when I had needed them in a bad way I would have been better off if I had just brought along a little red wagon.

The shortest coverage I see is for 45 days at $329.

You can do shorter coverage for 7, 14 or 30 days for a lot less. The one for $329, if I'm not mistaken, lasts all year.

you are wrong unless they have changed their rules.. you can buy it in any time block you want. it's what i bought last year hunting with Mart for a 2 week period( although i didn't use it). tsetse flies weren't bad except in a few VERY small area. Deet worked good enough for my purposes- and i was there in Oct in the heat, not the cooler months like you. and for the life of me, i can't figure out why you are getting yellow fever shots. as a doctor( although admittedly not an infectious disease specialist), i don't see the need. if you go to CDC website, they will have you getting EVERY innoculation known to man if you are leaving the US. obviously there is a remote chance of catching anything anywhere, but generally a greater chance of having an adverse reaction to the shot than catching the disease. to each his own i guess.

Yeah, you smell like a flower shop for half an hour then it dissipates. I only averaged about 1 tsetse bite a day - usually late in the day when I didn't reapply the SSS and it kept the mopane bees out of my eyes, ears, and nose in Sept. It was a good trade off as far as I was concerned. And again, the PH used it and asked for the left overs and a spare that I had in my pack so it must not have bothered him.

I'll call Global rescue because I couldn't find the shorter option on their site, Thanks.
As far as the shots go, I printed out the CDC recommendations and took them to my doctor who recommended about half of them, I'm not a doctor so I just do what my doctor tells me.

retreeverFrank the Avon stuff works great with the repellant in the skin so soft. Here is a link to the stuff with picardin in it. Lasts all day. I like the towelettes better then spray.
