Dande or Makuti in July?

I would probably pick Dande over Makuti for buff at any time. We only saw buff in Makuti last May/June while driving on tar roads (except for some high on the escarpment). I didn't see many in the bush but we were tracking ele. Having said that, we saw 2 really nice dugga boys together from the road. They were nice enough to excite the PH but they were on the wrong side of the road of course!

I just returned from Dande South. The buff there are taking a beating from poachers and lion. Dande East might be better.

I hunted Makuti in 03 and the buff hunting then was very good. Don't know whats up there now but as the buff move up from the valley into Makuti it should be good to very good I would immagine.

What does Buzz say?

I hunted in Makuti last September and we saw plenty of buffalo, including some sizable, 50+ animal herds as well as a number of dagga boy groups of 2 to 5 bulls. Not sure how the trophy quality might vary since I have not hunted Dande, but there are certainly buffalo in Makuti and we saw several dandies (no pun intended) including a really nice bull that we caught on video.

It certainly could have been the time of year for me as the grass was quite high and we weren't looking for them. I would recommend going where the PH wants to go.

I have always had good luck in makuti late in the year when water is limiting.

Poaching is a problem - in both areas.

makuti is more likely to deliver a top trophy than dande, but you will to shoot a reasonable bull in Dande in July, Makuti may be great or empty handed. As a PH, my tip depends largely on there being blood on the ground and a satisfied client - therefore, I will pick dande at that time of year.

You can be pretty certain of shooting a good buff in Dande - but proably not good enough to put your name into rowland ward.

Makuti gives you a chance of shooting a record book buff, but also of coming home with nothing.

Most areas have probably dinged more buff than they should have, irrespective of legal quotas.

Dande North will have more buff, and at least it is more out in the sticks than Makuti.
