Moon phases in Africa?
This is probably a dumb question, but since I am not sure of the answer, I'm asking it before I book some hunt dates.......are the moon phases the same in Namibia as in North America, for example December 23 was our full moon, was it a full moon in Windhoek as well?

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

If you have a handheld GPS they also sometimes have the moon phases on them. I checked mine for tz before I booked my 07 hunt and it worked perfectly for me. Does it really have an affect, I don't know but it can't hurt. Smiler

If you have that much to fight for, then you should be fighting. The sentiment that modern day ordinary Canadians do not need firearms for protection is pleasant but unrealistic. To discourage responsible deserving Canadians from possessing firearms for lawful self-defence and other legitimate purposes is to risk sacrificing them at the altar of political correctness."

CRUSHER,

Thanks for posting that wonderful URL. As a scientist I know, or should/did know, most of the sun/moon interactions. But to visualize the actual position of sun and moon and where daylight is/is not is reall COOL!

Those who have wondered about these matters check this; http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/sunearth.html

In good hunting.

Canuck:

I can't speak for African game, but for North American whitetails and other deer type critters the moon phase definitely affects the amount of daytime movement. Several scientific studies confirm this and it is a MAJOR factor one should consider when there is an option on the time frame for a whitetail hunt. I've had similar comments from some elk hunters but don't know of any studies on it. Like I said, it may not have any effect in Africa, but I'll take it into account on my hunt dates, why not?

I have only noticed it on Kudu we hunted when the moon was full. during the day we only saw one kudu between 4 hunters. we went for a knight drive to shoot some jackal and we saw plenty of Kudu moving and feeding in the full moon. i think it has an effect but how big i dont know

FWIW, from my experience a lot depends on the particular area, species and whether there's a lot of predator pressure or not.

A lot of people seem to think that it's harder to take a Leopard near the full moon..... I personally disagree and about half the Leopards I've ever taken have been on, or close to the full moon. Might not be the same on all areas though.

The phase of the moon is the same everywhere on earth at any given time. It lies sideways in Africa though, and that is a bit disconcerting if you've never seen it. Or perhaps it's in the Northern hemissphere that it lies sideways. shocker
