We have never used a scope on a double rifle but have a good friend who feels this is the way to go. With a QD 1 X 4 or a 1.25 X 4. He is thinking of a Trijicon.

My concern is eye relief with the .470 NE and the scope moving in the rings with the big bang.

Anyone out there have experience and willing to share them.

I have used a Lyman All American 2 1/2X scope on my Krieghoff Teck O/U .458 WM double rifle since 1971 with never a problem. Just make sure the scope chosen has sufficient eye relief to keep it away from the forehead in all situations.

Since a double rifle is hardly ever used in a prone position, setting it for standing/kneeling should take care of all eventualities. (I once shot my .375 H&H Teck prone, lying on a thorn bush, for lack of better support, with no problems, and I hit the eland I was aiming at, some 200 yards away, right in the boiler room.)

Glenn have him put one of the holographic red dot scopes on it.

Mike: I'd like to do that with my Merkel .470. Does anyone out there have experience with one on the Merkel?

Thanks guys, I certainly shall have him look into those options. I think they both are good ideas. I comes down I guess to how the guy feels about the suggestions.

i mounted a scope on my old merkel 470. it worked well and didn't affect the regulation. only thing about it is that it does seem to make the rifle a bit more clumsy. however being able to see a sight certainly offset that

I have scopes on my 9,3x74R double and on my 450/400 double.

I think every double 450/400 and under should have a scope in quality QD mounts.
Use it when you need it, take it off when you don't.

On the bigger bores I would worry about eye releif, especially if you ever doubled the rifle.

On the harder kickers a Doctor Optic is the way to go IMHO.

I have one on my Searcy 450-400 in Talley rings and mount and love it. My Merkel is a different story and I would like to put one on it.

On a 470 I'd look at one of the little red dots too. Leupold makes one that looks nice and I think for quick shooting it might be good. I think Wayne at AHR makes a mount that adapts a trijicon to a talley type base, so you can mill in the base and no one would probably know it. Really cool idea.

I've got a Schmidt & Bender 1.1-4 on my Blaser S2 in .470 and it has never worked loose or touched me, even hunched over it on the bench. Also on Blaser QD mounts, accurate, quick and repeatable.

Not a problem, have shot lots of CZ rifles with their mounts. I think both the rifles and their mounts are great.

GOB - i used leupold detachables, never had a bit of trouble. The scope was 1-4 microdot. I milled slots into the solid rib and the rings attached directly into them

Thanks, I have had folks say that they have had problems with Leoupold breaking with heavy recoiling doubles. It is good to hear that you have not experienced any problems.

I've done it, don't like it, ruins the handling, but an old man with failing eyes has to do what he has to do.
I put them on a .425 WR, a .450/400, 3 different.375 Flanged Mags and a .470 over the years, also a .240 Flanged H&H and .300 Flanged Mag(altered by H&H to handle either belted or flanged) over the years.
None had to be re-regulated.

Some were done when the eyes weren't so old, just making a plains rifle out of a double 'cause I wanted to do so.

I had JJ set my Chapuis .470 up with bases and some rings. I have a Leupold 1-4x20 for it. It shoots great. While I've hunted only without the scope, I've taken the scope just in case. In the range shooting I've done, everything works fine. I don't like the carry of the gun so much with the scope on it, and would rather shoot buffalo without the scope, I justified it by telling myself it would add some versitility to the gun. Regulates fine with the scope, but I don't think I shoot it any better at .470 ranges with the scope than I do without it.

That seems to be a great argument for and against but the best advice it that if one is prepared then it is possible to go either way if needed as long as you have the proper equipment. Back to the old practice, practice and then practice some more.

Hello Glenn and welcome to AR. I have owned Heyms in .470 and .500 both of which had Zeiss scopes in claw mounts. If I were to do it over today, I believe that I would go with the Doctor Optic. I look forward to seeing you again in Harrisburg next month!

I have scopes on my 9.3x74 and my 470 both in aclaw mounts. The 30 mm nikon african in 1x is as fast as irons or a red dot. The only problem with a scope on a double.is that it will hang over thhe breach and slow loading down just a little. I have not hunted buff ,but onre of the cons about doubles is picking a clear shot in heavy cover. The 4x could be handy then and with just a turn of.a ring the 1x is faster for old eyes with just a little training and a proper stock. Peak accuracy

You may have to regulate your loads for the scope and get.by with less than top accuracy with Irons

I'm going to play around with putting a Trijicon RMR sight on my 9.3x74R.

Will report how it goes when done.

It will probably be on a Valmet bridge mount, so a scope can be swapped on it, or the open sights.

Testing it to compare how it works for persons having vision problems focussing on open sights vs a red dot sight.

A chap on the NE forum has a QD one on his .470, a Swarovski I believe, he has had no problems, I have one on a .375 but a Schmidt & bender, again no problems. I wouldn´t shoot a .470 prone with a scope though, if fact even without a scope ! best
