German tourist killed in Namibia
Local paper has a story about a German tourist being shot and killed about 50km west of Windhoek and his wife was taken on a high speed chase. Unusual crime for Namibia. Paper said the couple had arrived hours earlier for a wildlife photography vacation. Man was identified as 56 year old Johannes Fellinger.

Hence the problem with a "photo" safari - guy could've raised a hell of a fuss by shooting back with a .470 Nitro!

Agreed. Just sounds odd-getting shot within hours of arriving. My PH had a hard time buying ammo and I did not see firearms except at the concession.

A SIGHT-SEEING trip on the outskirts of Windhoek turned into a horror experience for a German tourist on Sunday afternoon - her husband was shot dead in front of her by robbers.

By yesterday afternoon, Police were still fine-combing the area near Otjimbingwe for some trace of the two men who apparently shot dead 56-year-old Johannes Fellinger in cold blood.

At around midday on Sunday, the Fellingers apparently stopped approximately 60 km outside of Windhoek, on the Daan Viljoen road, Police spokesperson Sergeant Stephan Nuuyi told The Namibian yesterday.

His wife remained in the bakkie in which they were travelling while Fellinger apparently got out of the vehicle to take some photographs.

According to information the woman would later give to Police, two armed men suddenly appeared out of the bush and confronted her.

Her husband tried to come to her rescue, she said, but was shot in the head by one of the suspects.

The men then loaded his body onto the bakkie, got into the vehicle, and with her still in it, sped off in a northerly direction.

At farm Okariro on the D1420 road, they stopped the vehicle and proceeded to rifle through the couple's possessions.

They were interrupted by the arrival of the owner of the farm.

As he approached the bakkie, the men then apparently got into the bakkie again and sped off, until the driver lost control and overturned the vehicle at the turn-off to Otjimbingwe.

The two men, one slightly injured, managed to flee the scene on foot.

The woman was admitted to the Roman Catholic Hospital in Windhoek, where she was treated for minor injuries.

I agree. A sad chance occurrence.

Absolutely.

It is a great country to visit and seemingly safe, but there are bad guys pretty much everywhere.

When things go South, it sure happens in a hurry.
