I am looking for the short gators that I see guys wearing when they have shorts on. Where can a get a couple of pairs.

The average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary. It takes a special sort of man to understand and enjoy liberty; and he is usually an outlaw in democratic societies.

Do you want the leather or the synthetic ones?

I have gotten them through Cabelas or stores such as REI (REI has a limited supply of hunting colors though, No camo).

I don't know where to get leather ones. I have used the Cabelas Tick Gators and they seemed to work well.

Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. Especially when you are sleeping in the Wall Tent.

Just as sierrabravo45 said, I purchased mine from REI and went with black for the color. I have used them in Zim. and S.A. and they worked great.

I got some really nice ones from Boyt Harness. They were cheap too - 15 bucks or so.

Another vote for the Boyt gaiters. Then leave them with your PH for his use and get a new pair for your next safari. Most of them wear them religously and don't have access to them while in the bush. They will be much appreciated.

what are they used for.......to stop stuff from getting in your boots.

i wore shorts alot on my safarie and had no problems at all with stuff getting in my boots. and we went through some pretty thick stuff at times.

My friend PH Herve is using long leather gaiters.

JB,

Are his gaiters fastened with velcro? They look like they might get a little hot?

PS. That's an intersting sawed off shotgun he has in his belt. For going in after wounded leopard?

Those things look like shipping boots for horses. I made some gators like that once out of camo material, canvas, and and velcro. They worked but they were hot.

I've used the Boyt Gators in Africa several times with great results. There is always some type of grass, seeds, burrs, or other crap that attempts to get into your boots or cling to your laces, these Gators are great for protecting against that. Also, they are cotton canvas, so they are not very hot, and do not extend very far above the top of the boot.

Made a huge mistake and did not take them on a trip to south Texas, and the Spear Grass made me miserable the whole time I was there. Gators would have made all of the difference.

Only downside to the Boyt model is that they are one piece (no velcro), which means that you have to take your boot off to get them on or off. To me this is not a huge disadvantage as I really can't see myself wanting to take them off during the hunt. And, frankly the velcro models could come off when breaking through the thick stuff.

Another vote for the Boyt -- You can't lose -- they are comfortable, they work, and they are cheap.

I also use the Boyt canvas gators in Africa - get two pair that way one pair can be washed (they get kind of dirty after 3-4 days).

jbderunz,

What is your PH hunting. It looks like he's packing a sawed off shotgun on his left hip, plus a rifle. Looks like one of the trackers is also holding a shotgun.

Herve is always wearing this leather and velcro riding gaiters. He is admitting they are hot (as his shoes are) but they have many advantages :
no noisy flap flaps,
no seeds, no dust, no dew in the ankles,
no punctures or scratchs or cuts from the vegetation.
no insects such the billions of ants, bees, tsetse flies, gnats, and mosquitos that sting us all day and all night long.
no impediment when running
his shoes and trousers are less worn out.

The saw-off 12 gauge is for snakes (or any small vermin) and this day it was for leopard hunting in the blind. Note the first tracker is bearing a 12, the second my 375 and the PH my 460Wby I gave him last year.

The Boyt Gators are great and have been to Africa twice with me. The best aspect of them are in Tsetse Fly zones they keep the buggers from flying/crawling up your legs inside your long pants and having prime time on your legs.
Bring two pairs and make someone a friend for life. They are very durable and light weight. You will not know they are on with short pants and they do keep the seeds out.

I use and recomend the Boyt's also. Other than the seeds, etc, they keep the sand out when you end up in one of the dry river beds.

I did hate it when I had gotten my boots on and laced up and realized I'd forgotten the gaiters! Worse yet I did it a couple of times, but only before AM coffee!

Cabelas was carrying the Boyt's but have discontinued carrying them. I found some in the "Bargain Basement" section for $5 a pair. Will buy up more at my next visit.

$11.00 from Boyt Harness:

bewildered Ummm, didn't you offer to sell me those for about $50? beer

I can attest to the Boyts.

I'm not sure who makes them, but my PH had a pair that hooks onto his bootlaces that kept them down nicely and helped keep grass from getting up underneath them.

I don't think I ever got over about $18.00 and that was just the Larium talking -- I couldn't remember what they cost. Confused (Come to think of it, maybe I did try to turn a quick profit.Eeker) Of course, you got to use them for free, so that was a better deal! wave

The elastic at the top and the way they fit over the top of the boots always kept them in place for me.

I have used Boyt's in the past and have been very happy with them.

Another alternative is Gaiters from She Safari

I have a pair of these and they appear to be well made. I have not field tested them. They have full length Velcro down the back of the gaiters which allow you to put them on/take them off without removing your boots (as is the case with the Boyt's). [I removed that dumb little "pocket" that is on the side of each one.]

Terry

Of course if you want to go the ultra cheap route, just cut off the last 8" or so of a pair of drawstring bottomed BDU pants you are throwing away, hem them up, and voiala! That's how we generally make ours, and they last for a good, long time and aren't too hot.
