I have a 500 Jeffery on a Blaser R8, and would appreciate your thoughts and recommendations on a scope. I am leaning towards a Swarovski z6i 1-6x 24 EE. I practice quite a lot out to 100 meters and hit a clay pigeon 8/10 times but I think it would just give me more confidence with a scope on this beast.present locationjohannesburgnorthcliff

Leupold makes a V6 model with the same range, you might want to look at that. It will be less expensive.

From the reports i have read about scopes on big bore rifles.

They will all fail some sooner than others.

The Leopold 2.5 fixed was ranked the highest. and it also failed after a number of rounds.

It was recommended to have 2 scopes sighted in for a big bore rifle so if one fails you have your back up while on safari.

I'm sure your scope will be fine. I have a Leupold 1.5-5x scope on my 500 Jeffery with Talley QR mounts and they have both held up well with over 400 rounds through the rifle so far, most of them full power.

Bwana338, I'm not in disagreement with you, scope failure just hasn't happened to me yet. Lately I tend to shoot as much with open sights as I do with the scope, so there's less wear and tear on the scope. It's amazing how accurately the Talley QR rings come back to zero on my CZ though

I would stay clear of the Leopold as sooner or later it will cut you open.
Schmidt&Bender,Swarovski and Nickel have good eye relief scopes that have a padded edge.

I don't know if it is possible on a Blaser but my choice for a 500 Jeff would be a top quality red dot sight mounted on a picatinny rail. Very fast and if it goes bad it can be removed in a blink. Guys are discovering this combo on doubles but no reason not to use it on a bolt gun. A pal mounted an Eotech on a Winchester model 70 458 and loves it. He is going brown bear hunting down the road and thinks it is perfect. I think he has about $600 all in for the rail permanently mounted plus sight.

scopes with them in the last 6 months. Great DG scope. Best warranty in the business.

Perhaps Ivan Carter might be persuaded to weigh in on this, as I understand he has been using Trijicon products on his big double(s).

Might be worth having a look at the Hakko Panorama which gives you a choice of 4 different aim setups, including sharper or lighter contrast.

Can't go wrong with Swaro, just not in my budget, my Leupold fits the bill. Hasn't cut me yet (fingers crossed).

If I could hit a clay target at 100 meters 8 out of 10 times, I wouldn't worry about a needing a scope.

I put a Trijicon 30mm 1x5 on my Heym 500 Jeff.....awesome. On 1 power, it's perfect for those 25-50 yd shots......and very fast.
