Selous in early September?
I'm booked with Luke Samaras starting the first week in September (2008). Anyone hunted the Selous during this time that can tell me the frequency of game for the grass and weather conditions? I am mainly concentrating on Buffalo, but would love to take a Nyasa Wildebeest as well. Thanks.

You must be booked with him through September 6th unless you're using one of the PH's that work with him....

In normal years all grass should be burned...If a wet season like this year, there was still rain coming in August and nightly downpours and lots of long tall 10 feet high grass...
You should get a nyasa but I must add are there any in the area of his concession...Ask him...

Vic, when I said booked with him, I meant his outfit, not him personally as a PH. I don't know who they will assign us for that. Are you booked to go then?

I hunted the Selous in early September 2002 and while some grass had been burned off the majority was still there. We hunted hard for our buffalo but were completely successful. I think that there are so many buffalo in the Selous it's not hard to find decent bulls if you work at it. We also saw lion, kudu, wildebeest, Zebra, hartebeest and even Sable. so in spite of the higher then normal grass we saw plenty of game.

KUDUBULL
We just returned on Sept 8th. We hunted with PVT in MK1 block and it was great. Most of the grass had been burnt. However, becasue of the late rains, the R2 block had very tall grass and hunters there did not ahve the success we had on the plains game, but they did well on cats. The blocks were about a 30 minute plane ride from each other.

Just make sure you ask as the dates get closer.

Also, we did not see a tsetse fly.

Good luck!

Yes, I'll be hunting with Luke starting on the 7th. I'll be looking forward to hearing about your plans between now and then as well as possibly meeting you when we're there.
