African Dangerous Game Cartridges
Is a book by Pierre van der Walt. I believe he's South African. What are your opinions him and/or his book? I find it very informative, but I have no experience with Dangerous Game. Thanks, captdavid

I know Pierre fairly well although we aren't close friends. Pierre is in my opinion knowledgable and an entertaining writer with a sharp wit. I liked his book and wish the next would appear in print. Pierre is a no BS type of guy and generally has a firm opinion of things. It doesn't always win him friends but I would say that it won my respect for his approach.

Have Pierre autograh it for you if you buy the book.

I wish he'd write one on plains game rifles. If you see him, please pass that on. Captdavid

There is not perfect book but Pierre's is very good. Could have written more about big bores. Taylor is the classic but with a pinch of salt. Read Keith Robertson for buffalo and Sanchez Arino on elephant and big bores. I would suggest starting decision making with what you are going to hunt, terrain, and the " experience". An early decision is double vs bolt and that is influenced by terrain. I love my .577 (close heavy cover) and Gibbs .505 (open, longer shot out to 300yds and also for PG) but horses for courses. Also your tolerance for recoil. No good buying a big bore if you are scared of it or flinch.

I wouldn't shoot a big brown at 200+ yards with a 30-06. Maybe inside of a 100 and Phil Shoemaker recommends 220 gr 30-06 for that.

I've known Pierre since the early 1990s, and African Leadwood has described the guy I know and respect. Pierre started his "plains game" book soon after "Dangerous Game" was published. He checks this site infrequently, but I'll pass on the address to this thread in case he wants to comment.

Wonderful book . . . as a double rifle shooter this would be the last reloading book I would ever part with.

Lots of historical stuff for us vintage users and lots of modern stuff for contemporary shooters. Highly recommended.

Pierre responded to my email tonight, and said the writing is done and he's working on page layouts.

Pierre van Der Walt is a gentleman in every sense of the word and an incredibly knowledgeable authority on firearms. Few people mention that he is the brains behind the .458 African, which is gaining ground especially in Zimbabwe. It's one of his hobbies: designing new calibers and I believe he has a few more like the African in his files.

The book is highly recommended, not only for the wealth of information it contains, but also for the first-rate presentation.

How about some details on this cartridge? What case is the base for this round?

Pierre van der Walt is currently busy with a book on the medium-small calibers. He said it will be on the shelf in the near future , fiances to publish a book is a lot of money but he is working on it.

A great book. I have read it through multiple times along with Kevin Robertson's Most Dangerous and Terry Wieland's Dangerous Game Rifles. Between them all everything is covered.

Ok, I will bite. Who has one for sale? Looked around briefly but could not find a reasonably priced copy. ( by reasonably price, I mean, not a scalper price)

Thanks!

Contact Bob Harper with Outdoor Visions. He had a big stack of the books at DSC. Not sure what he has left but he was selling them for $39.95.

Wow! Im pretty sure I paid over a $100 bucks for my book..

I love the above quote by Jim Corbett, more hunters should feel like he does, the element of danger adds zest to hunting, sharpens the senses, a full blown charge is the ultimate rush IMO, Ones reaction to it may or may not be the same in every instance. its likely to be a crapshoot with some folks.

Those that don't feel this phenominum don't need to hunt DG, the odds are not good for them.

Those that create such instances on purpose are apt to live a short life or be lucky as hell. I know one PH who is famous for creating charges for clients and I find this more than distasteful. old

I will have to have a look around. African Hunter did a feature article on it about 3 years or so ago.

The 458 African is a different animal from the 458 Express.
The parent case I believe is the 404 jeff and the OAL is 3.40 to fit in a standard action re-chambered 458 mag. there is also an extended version to 3.60. It will the reproduce 458 Lott or better
