Yep- old Pete and Zimbabwe. They got the monster this past Saturday, which was the second to the last day of the hunt. Pete and the client both deserved it. The client has the best luck of anyone I know- in the same concession 4 years ago he took a 55 pounder on the first day of his safari, and a great leopard on the 4th day.

Is nothing like hunting such a trophy in an open area. Hope I can have a photo like that with myself on it...no problem even if I´m the one showing lion´s tail.

Congratulations again.

Havn't seen a wild Lion like that for a long time..congratulation to him and the PH....Surprised as to where he came from but one thing I do know is that good lions are like gold, they are just wherever you happen to find them...

Mokore Safari's and their partners held Chewore South for many years and still buy quota there. Clients basically all have had an opportunity to kill a "mature" lion but monsters like Mr. Barth posted did show up occasionally proving the genetics must be pretty good there. Barry Duckworth has been telling me the lion numbers are definitely up over the last few years so maybe we will see more great lions from Chewore.

May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.

LOL! I am sure Pete would NOT appreciate that remark, fairly sensitive about his lost youth... should have seen him and Buzz go at it about their school boy days!

But a dam good lion and Peter is a dam good hunter... works hard for his clients, for sure. Congrats, Pete.

Just received an email from Pete today on this safari. He was proud of his clients trophy and spoke highly of a long 16 day battle to get the beast. Pete is back in the bush to "sort things out" as he called it, and there is no doubt Mr. Barnard will be successful in the sorting. He is an excellant PH and a heck of a lot of fun to be around!

Beautiful lion indeed, ( I like yours, UEG Smiler ). Speaking of lions, I read somewhere, either in the Gazette or AH that Africa has less than 40k lions left on the whole continent. Is that an accurate number? Thanks, jorge

Various estimations (That is all they are) vary from just under 20K to around 40K for the whole of Africa. It is generally accepted that close to 50% of these are found in Tanzania and that most of those are found outside of national Parks and Game Reserves! I thought the latter was an interesting stat......

Just looking around on the forums and I found Mr. Barth (my booking agent) has already posted a couple pictures of my lion. Pete Barnard and I worked hard for this cat. In the morning, before I shot this one, we had pretty much given up hope that we were going to find a suitable lion. We had seen a total of nine males, but nothing that I wanted to take. It happened on the 16th day, and not from a blind. The whole experience was beyond anything I could ever imagine. I know that I must be lucky, because you just aren’t supposed to find a cat like this in Chewore S. Any of you that have hunted cats before know how psychologically demanding it can be, and how rewarding when it finally comes together.
