Plains Game Ammo
Any words of wisdom re using 180 grain accubonds from 30-06 for standard plainsgame? I have never shot that particular bullet but a new rifle loves them.

If your rifle loves them then use them. They should be fine for plains game.

I have only used the a frame 180g in my 30-06 for plains game-your bullet should be just fine

Like Bryan i am a die hard A-Framer and was concerned about the real world results of this bullet's ability to go deep.

Butch, I've used the Accubond for Aoudad, Whitetail, Fallow, and Oryx....not a problem. They have the accuracy of a Ballistic Tip in my rifles, but are strong enough (Bonded) for bigger game, especially in a 180gr bullet.

African game do not wear body armor.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I have seen some very good results with the accubond in 30-06.

I myself am a die hard 180 grain barnes X fan (in 300 win) when it comes to plains game. But that is just because when you have a load that shoote well in your rifle and kills well, WHY CHANGE ??

African stuff is tough but...

Like Mike said , "African animals don't wear body armor"

Your accubonds will be fine. The biggest problem with African game is, by far, poor shot placemnt over bullet failure or the toughness of the game. I don't care what you're shooting among the plains game, if you take out their heart and/or lungs, they are going to die in a very timely manner. Just like any other animal.

Why change? Because some clever 'been to Africa once' poster suggest that only XYZ's are good enough, and what you find good is only good on paper! Big Grin

Me? I've been using 150 grain Nostler Partitions in a .308 in for many years. On many occasions I've fallen for the 'advice' and switched to XYZ's; but in the end I came back to what works for me every time!

If your rifle shoots 'any' brand of true premium hunting bullet well - stick to that! Indeed, why change?

In good hunting.

What I have learned on AR:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place to get a steak dinner? is…you really want pork chops.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified so it can carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and a detachable box magazine both use mechanical latches, only the floor plate latch is reliable regardless of the fact that almost every modern military rifle in the world uses a detachable box magazine including those chambered in 50 BMG.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact that it is the choice of more military sniper units and law enforcement agencies than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR, and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting game that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (despite the fact most safaris take place in the winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. It is not the size of the ding in the gun's finish that matters but whether or not the ding occurred in the safe or in the field because safe dings are okay but field dings are worse.
10. In general, those who have time to make close to a 1000 posts a year on AR, know more about hunting and shooting than people who make their living in the hunting and shooting industry and have typically spent 150 days in the field or at the range each year for the last two decades.

A friend of mine hunted plains game, zebra being the largest, all fell to ONE well placed shot with the 270 Win shooting 150 gr core lock ammo. Standard stuff.

Nothing is better than A-Frames, in my opinion. If you want a ballistic tip, use the Swift Scirocco's -- much better bullet than the accubond.

While I only use A frames for my African bolt guns, thinking any premium bullet that is well placed will be fine. Smiler
