Thank you again for another superb article. I was especially intrigued by the authors' statement that the African elephant too had been domesticated historically because I have never read of any domestication of the African elephant after Hannibal's invasion of Rome.

Mehul: in fact the Belgians erected a station in the Congo during the 30´s at Gangala Na Godio or something like that. For more than 15 years they tried to domesticate the African elephant with some success I understand. Armand Denis made a story about that and some references can be found in Sánchez Ariño´s works.

Mehul: I have these books in Spanish, the Denis´work was titled Unforgettable Safaris (translated from some obscure French title which I don´t remember) and Tony´s book is of course "Ivory". Now the mist which usually fills my mind seems to disipate a little, perhaps the training station was at Gangala Na Bodio and this place could be in the Congo or in the Sudan, I´m not sure. But I remember the ending of the project due to high costs and lack of funding. It seems that juveniles should be captured and trained, and that often meant the mother´s death.
