THE government plans to conduct a special campaign in areas where crocodiles have been endangering people's lives.
Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Prof. Jumanne Maghembe, told the National Assembly here yesterday that the strategy to tame crocodiles would be determined by where they are specifically located.
"The government is ready to have an operation designed to tame crocodiles which claim people's lives, especially near lakes and rivers," he said when answering supplementary questions of Ernest Mabina (Geita- CCM) and Hilda Ngoye (Women Special Seat-CCM) respectively.
The legislators wanted to know if the government had sustainable programmes to limit the increasing number of crocodiles threatening lives of people.
He said the government has been working closely with district councils in identifying areas which are greatly affected by dangerous animals apart from crocodiles.
Earlier, when answering a basic question, the Ministry's Deputy Minister, Ms Zubein Mhita said the government was willing to conduct an operation to tame crocodiles.
She was responding to Dr Festus Limbu who wanted to know when the government will reduce the number of crocodiles in Magu District. "So far only four people have been reported to be killed by crocodiles from the area," she said, adding that if thelegislator had a different figure, he was allowed to present it to the ministry.
She promised Dr Limbu that the government would compensate families of victims who had been killed by crocodiles if they presented their names.
