Close call on elephant charge
Will is exactly right. I just threw the shot out there in the general area where I knew it should be and hoped for the best. It was a quick shot in a very fluid, quickly evolving situation by an inexperienced hunter. It is one thing to look at pictures of frontal brain shot placement at home. It is another matter to stand and deliver the goods.

465 H&H, your assertion about stopping a charge versus stopping and killing is, in my very limited experience, spot on. I defer to others with more experience on the matter.

Good point Will. Brain shots are missed frequently when standing still much less charging. I'll never be able to hunt enough to become "expert" on the subject of braining elephants so I like to use big bullets that help cover small errors on my part. I still have to get it close. Wink

The question is, when are you going to have enough money from hawking your clothes to go back?

HT, you've been home a few days. That's long enough to make a decision on when you're going back?

If you go to this link

http://www.rannsafaris.com/videos.html

and select the elephant video (not the charge sequence), Jeff Rann (Will's hero) has some thoughts on the brain shot...not so much technical thoughts as it is about the mental concentration needed. It's interesting and you get to see what's got to be the biggest bodied elephant hit the ground. We've talked about it before but that's a BIG ele.

That is a huge elephant!

I do wonder why the PH did not, "Shoot one, load one" when that close to a very large dangerous animal?
