Zim auction hunts

Does anyone have any experience with these? Is it worth doing or is it too risky?

Seems to me there are several issues including:

1- Specific dates may or may not work.

2- Pay up front regardless of whether the animal is taken.

3- One may want animals that have to come from yet another auction to obtain the animals that one wants. There is zero assurance that these can be obtained.

4- Does the PH have any experience in the area?

I am thinking of Sapi.

Larry:

Thierry took his dad to Sapi on an auction hunt and shot a 60lbs ele in 2009. You can get the rundown from Labat in Vegas.

I know two men looking at going into Sapi this year for elephant.

I'll tell you what I know when I see you, but you've pretty well hit the nail on the head as far as dates, pay up front, available animals, etc.

I have heard concerns expressed of late regarding the taking of excessive quotas in both Sapi and Nyakasanga. Do a search. My recollection is that Buzz and Martin Pieters both expressed similar concerns. I could be mistaken. I saw the thread I am thinking about in the last 30-60 days.

Larry, the guy that I know that lives off of auctions is Doug Kok. There may be others as well but I know he does it. my concern about it would be those areas are pretty much like uncontrolled game lands (similar to the US but ours are controlled) and there is probabaly limited anti-poaching going on.

Doug Kok is certainly one guy that does them for sure and is my buddy Nigel Theisen's contact for keeping tabs on them.

Was contemplating Sapi for ele.

To be honest they never turn out to be cheaper than any other good area. Sapi produces good ivory and Nyakasanga used to be a great lion destination...not so sure any more...certainly they are no real bargain and seem a risky venture to I.

Hi Larry, I vote for Doug Kok also, I have hunted with Doug many times including 3 trips into the valley from hunts bought from the auctions that you are asking about, Doug arrived into the states last night his cell phone number is 586.321.2263.. Give him a call he can fill you in on all the details...

Doug is a stand up guy and I have known him for a long time. I will put my reputation up by saying I would not hesitate to go with him anywhere, anytime! There is of course never a guarantee in real hunting. I dont know that I can remember him ever getting skunked. That dosnt mean much with my memory these days so better to give him a call and talk direct.

Aaron, That is the issue for the hole damn country as far as I can tell. I will exclude people we know that have asked for reduced quotas. I dont want to paint wiith too broad a brush but overall..... The reason Doug has to rely on auction hunts is simply he had every damn thing he owned taken. Everything he had was tied up in his farm. Who are you booking for again? Im not trying to be a smart ass I truly dont remember. The quotas are what they are and it dosnt matter that I dont approve of them. I just think it is another nail in the coffin of a once great country.

Hi Mike, he travels to Chicago tomorrow for a few days, then off to California and then back to Michigan around February 10th he will probably stay in Michigan until he leaves for Zimbabwe, the Parks Auction is on the 3rd of March this year,, he would love to talk with old friends or anybody wanting some information on hunting in Zimbabwe, for those who don’t want to mesh with the auction side of things but remember you can get some pretty good deals along with camping on the Zambezi, he has another area that borders Lake Kariba, I have also hunted this area with Doug a couple of times, this area has some outstanding plains game including all the dangerous game, although the Elephant poaching is heavy right now.. His cell number that he uses during his time in the States is 586.321.2263.

For example could I bid on a hunt and what are the regulations? Could I come into the country with my guns and hunt?

Just to add one more vote for Doug Kok. I have hunted with Doug since 1996. This includes approxamately 8 valley hunts. I have hunted both Nyakasanga as well as Sapi. I have also hunted with him in Kwe Kwe as well as the above mentioned area in Chirara on lake Kariba. Doug is a stand up guy, and as ethical as the day is long. If you give him a call he will explain how the auctions work. I generally tell him what I'm looking to hunt and the maximum I'm willing to spend, then give him a deposit and let him do the bidding. I have always had a great time in the valley. Over the years I have gotten 4 elephants and 16 buffalo from that area, and have some great fishing to boot!
