How to get an Africa version Toyota 4dr truck into USA?

I am tired of F150's, Silverado's and other trucks that do not hold up like the Toyota Land Cruiser that PH's seem to use - I am talking about the 4 door trucks with a short pick up bed.

How do I get one into the USA?

There are a few different approaches to this but if you want one to drive daily it will need to be a model that is at least 25 years old.

I'd forget trying to get one out of Africa and find a good example out of Australia or South America. Land Cruisers Direct out of Utah ( or a similar outfit) is the easy button to get this done.

Of course the easier-easy button is find a USA 200 series unless the truck thing is a non negotiable.

I can sympathize - I would have liked to bring back the Volvo I owned in Sweden, but vehicles less than 25 years old have to meet all US standards . I think this generally makes importing vehicles less than 25 years old way beyond cost prohibitive.

A few years ago, CBP was bragging about how they destroyed newer vehicles that had been illegally imported.

Dogcat I completely restored an 80 series and in the process of rebuilding a 75 and was surprised how little wear and tear there was. They are bulletproof.

Maybe best to bring in a cruiser and have another engine put in? Quite a few here have the Chevvy 350 installed in theirs.

Both the 100 series and the 200 are great options.

The 25 year rule is definitely in place. You can bring a mine truck in from Canada, but you need to spend a lot for it to be road worthy.

We have them here, and I think they meet European standards.

Had one for 11 years.

Then exchanged it for a new one from the Toyota dealer!

Got 40% off the price of a new one??!!

I was very very surprised.

Taught my daughter to drive a manual shift in it, as it was the only one we had that was not automatic!

I was amazed at the number of Land Cruisers I saw in Mongolia. In UB I bet close to 20% of the vehicles were Cruisers, but not pickups. Most of the newer ones were diesels. Outfitter was driving his wife's hand me down, as he had just bought her a new one.

The 25 year rule applies. However vehicles licensed in Mexico can come into the USA and driven.

We had one on hire in June last year - drove from Kazungula to Gobabis in Nam across Chobe, Moremi, Magadigadi and the CKGR. Absolutely brilliant piece of kit - 140 litre tank, bodywork that feels like its made from something substantial and an engine that will happily chug through deep sand all day in 4WD low ratio with 800rpm.

The issue as others have said is that there is no way to make the engine compliant with any any emissions regs - the one we had was a 3.5 litre staight 6, no turbo, mechanical diesel pump - a donkey that will pull you up a cliff - but won't be legal anywhere that has a test of any kind.

Probably a 4.2 1HZ. I also have a V6 petrol which they put in the Tahoma in the states and that is another option.

I had a 1977 Land Cruiser. Sold it to a West Point grad who rolled it in the Mojave then drove it to his first duty station in Panama. I wonder who has it now!

I think these Toyotas are available in Canada??
I don't think the hurdles are as bad coming in from Canada since many of our Fords are built there!!

Fords built in Canada are built to USDOT and EPA specs.

I have owned a BJ42 from Canada, US market FZJ80's and an LX570. The BJ42 was not too difficult to get in before the 25 years. The big problem was parts. Though every factory Toyota part going to Canada and the US passes through Ontario, California. BJ42 specific parts had to come to the US from Canada. The friendly local Toyota dealers could not get them. That was a hassle.

The factory parts for the 40 series are drying up. The 80 series were last made in 1997--those are drying up too.

You really will have to go over the vehicle carefully and remember a lot will be RHD.
