What damage will winchester silver tips do to impala in 375h&h

shakariI know I'm gonna be a voice in the wilderness here but if you load 'em to the correct and fairly low velocity, then they'll be the dog's doo dahs and the equivalent of stepping up a calibre.
If you use the factory loads, they're too fast and as much use as a chocolate teapot!
I've no doubt everyone else will tell you they're useless!

onefunzr2Why? Are you worried they will ruin too much meat?

A NorthFork and a Silvertip (old aluminum tip) recovered from the exact same test medium.
But for an Impala...who cares...as long as you shoot him through the ribs.

kamaatuJust shot an Oryx over the weekend with the silver tip in .300 H&H. By far too soft and not to recommend.

Handload or factory load?

MacD37On deer size game in the USA, for many years the Winchester silvertip factory ammo was about the only factory ammo I used in my .3o cal rifles. These were the aluminum capped ammo. They worked about as well as one could ask at the factory velocities on deer size animals.
In the new factory ammo, on the other hand, I find the bullets to be too soft and a little explosive. That plastic so-called tip is, IMO, nothing more than a hollow point with a nose cone! Today there are several bullets of the same class that are better choices, the North Fork SP and the old Nosler partition, for instances!

safari-lawyerI've shot three boxes of 150 grain factory loads (polymer tips) through my 300WSM with mixed results.
On deer sized game, the results varied from the bullet exploding on impact and leaving a fist sized hole, to the bullet coming apart in the chest cavity and not exiting, to a nice passthrough with a good sized exit wound.
Maybe they're just too fast. I've now put them away for the old reliable 180 gr Nosler Partitions.

shakariI don't have much experience of the polymer tipped version and none of reloading the polymer tipped version..... but have handloaded the traditional version for many years...... and never had one fail.
From my experience at least, as long as you load 'em to a moderate velocity, they work brilliantly.
