larryshoresNo offense intended but it is damn hard for an American to understand given the accent.
I am not defending them but the video actually tells very little. What did they do specifically? The video says nothing specific. Before coming to a opinion, I need specifics.

Lhook7Maybe part 2 will have some substance, but part 1 is nothing but baseless accusations. Maybe this is what passes for journalism in Tanzania?

BaxterBHmm...might be careful about which Ker and Downey you are implicating. There are several “Ker and Downeys” out there. Lumping them all together would be unwise, I should think.

Opus1Calculating taxes for a multinational company doing business in Tanzania or any African country is hardly cut and dry. The tax laws in many of these countries is vague at best and few have any sophisticated structure. So it is not at all unusual for there to be "disputes". All one can do is negotiate a settlement and wait for the next "dispute".
Then there is always the underlying accusation that the white man in Africa is a racist and only there to take advantage of the poor black African. Of course the poor black Africa wouldn't have a job without the white man, but that never enters into the conversation.
SSDD
TIA

larryshoresI was looking for something else, a book actually. I came across this . This article pretty clearly sets forth that tax evasion by AFRICANS is a massive problem continent wide.

Calculating the taxes of a multinational company anywhere is problematic with countless things that are not clear. I know, I do it all the time.
When I see the insanity in the US tax laws and the major issues that are not at all clear, I have to wonder what other, less developed countries are like?
I am not defending the accused at all. However, when someone comes on here with a first post that is clearly attempting to make certain people look bad, one has to wonder exactly what their motive is?
No facts are given, just accusations. I can accuse the opening poster of being a gay, little green man from Mars. It doesn't make it true.
I did look at the letter. Honestly, the fact that they paid means nothing to me. I see clients pay large amounts just to be rid of the harassment. Reading between the lines here, I am willing to bet that there was more than a little bit of harassment. For example, passports were seized. I work all over the world with certain types of companies. I have NEVER once seen that happen in 40 years of practicing public accounting.
I would like to know the real story.

Opus1Larry, running a business in Africa is two parts the blind leading the blind and three parts blatant corruption and extortion and you will always be a target for all of the above.
I am sure we are getting less than 10% of the truth with the story above and someone is just attempting to stir up $hit for the Friedkin Group. These things have a funny way of backfiring.

I was hoping to goad the OP into providing more details. I guess there are none.

Sadly, African government have a fantastic track record of destroying success!
Zimbabwe and South Africa come to mind.
And all you need do is read these forums on travelling to several African countries and see how visitors are treated like idiots.
Africa, with its population and resources, can be an incredibly successful and prosperous place - if they can stop the rampant corruption!
