How would you rate this Buff and Kudu ???
Just returned from a job interview.

Did a game drive and took some photos.

How would you rate this Cape Buff

and this Kudu Bull

Sorry about the picture quality on the kudu he was about 200 meters away and had to zoom...

I'm not going to be one to throw numbers out there, but I would be ectatic with either (or even better, both!)!!

That buff just has "the look".

The kudu is exceptional ... has 2 1/2 curls, and reasonably deep. Full extra half curl, very seldom do you see that. I would say deep in the 50s. The buff had good drop, at least 40

Agree with Russ. I would even say the Kudu is sixty but no more and the last photo shows how long the horn goes back over the shoulder.

I will not be surprised if he went 60 with inches to spare.

The Buff as all the futures I love of in a Cape Buff...

Not sure and I find Kudu quite difficult to judge exactly. For me this one does not have deep curls and it is this depth that can dramatically increase the length of horn. However if the Kudu is large bodied you are probably right.

Whatever I would be too busy setting up the sticks to answer such trivial questions.

Gerhard: Do you have that buff in a high resolution image? Looks like a life size cape buffalo shooting target, second edition. With a little photoshop we can fill in those bosses.

He's a shooter, on the first day. Same with the kudu, he'd be hanging in the shed.

I agree the buff would be impossible to pass on.

I don't think the kudu goes over 55 by much. First day I would probably pass, by the third day he better be gone, or I'm all over him.

I would be over the moon with either or both, when I go on my first safari...one day....

I would think the Buffalo is at least mid 40's. The bosses look hard, even if they don't meet in the middle, and with the ears being ribboned like that, I doubt much of anyone would not shoot him.

I don't have much practical experience evaluating Kudu, but he looks like something I'd like to have on the wall.

Great bulls!

Thanks for the pics

When the first curl on a kudu bull is outside the ears and he has two and one half curls( they look pretty deep to me) one should take him.

I've taken six and none are as nice as this one. Maybe 58?

The buff is good but the kudu is right where they start getting really special. Thanks for letting us look at them!

It made this one time hunter to Africa (sadly) quite happy that his first impression of both was confirmed by posters I respect. (Was the buff in Zimbabwe or Mozambique. I came to think in my one time that the deep dip of the horns was from one or the other) I saw kudu (Chirisa safari district in '93) and with one of them had my PH praqctically begging me to shoot. (I already had my buff) In camp when he was really teeing off on me (we had become friends)as to why I had refused to shoot, I explained. Being divorced, I lived in an apartment with ceilings maybe 9 feet high - and I had no space to display a kudu with such horns! He stared at me and asked "And that's your reason?" He then explained about low mounts (not on a wall) - and I told him that I still was glad not to have shot him. (I didn't come to Africa to shoot deer like animals) Still, I don't want to insult kudu hunters and that left horn looks a lot more than even 55". Heck, I might have been tempted! Smiler

I find Kudu very hard to judge if one is looking for numbers. In a shop in SA there were several mounted Kudu. The best looking measured about 54". There was a 58" that did not look nearly as big. Spread, curl, and length all enter into the equation.

The buff has a nice drop, and spread looks good. I would prefer a more solid boss.

I have a kudu on my wall that looks alot like that one. Curls are tight. Mine flairs out like this one but not quite as far but mine has a larger V shape. Mine tapes at 50 inches. This one is low to mid 50's.

BUT WHAT DO I KNOW?

I would think this one and mine are close on size.
Mine is 54", this one might be a bit longer.

I going to guess 39-40 on the buff and 56 to maybe 57 on the kudu. Either way both would be in the salt. BOOM

Not a chance mate. Yours is a great old bull, lovely Kudu trophy with ivory tips but I would have made a call well under 55 which as you have stated it is recorded as such.

The bosses on that buff are as hard and polished as they are ever going to get! I'm amazed some have questioned the trophy aspect of that buff?
