Flying in ANY African airline, with maybe the exception of SAA is like playing Russian roulette, in ore ways than one it appears.

Yeah, I've flown many miles in the 1980's on Ethiopian Airlines in an old Dakota tail dragger. Had fold down web bench seats just like the WWII paratroops. Had the door come open on one of those once but we were going so slow it really didn't matter. Could see the shadow on the ground and tell something wasn't right. It didn't project down far enoguh to interfere with landing though. I remember one flight in particular from Teppi to Addis Ababa where two of us shared the cargo hold with bananas, goats, and two very air sick Ethiopians.

On a more serious note I once flew Air Kenya and was sitting in the seats right beside an emergency exit door.

An African was standing near the door with his kid during the flight. The kid started playing with the door handle tugging it, twisting it, trying to open it, while his father looked on. The stewards also just ignored it.

I put on my seatbelt. Just in case.

In the news item maybe one of the soldiers wanted to let a little fresh air in.
