OMUHONAPreference ? Good looking kudu or 60 incher ?
When the topic is about big kudu, you often hear what the perfect kudu looks like, what a 60 incher looks like and what looks good on the wall. My question is: Do you prefer a 60 incher, just to be satisfied that you got one or would you also prefer a good looking kudu ? because the 60 inchers are not always good looking.
Just for fun! Which one do you prefer and which is the 60 incher ?

475GuyI'm guessing that Pic #2 is the 60" and I kinda like the one in Pic #1.

MARK H. YOUNGI'm certainly no kudu expert but I would say the middle one with the deep curls is the longer one.

fritz454Personally I like the top right photo although the mass on the bottom one is impressive.
02 September 2005, 04:39
Charles_HelmI like the middle one. I'm not going to guess which is the 60 incher.

02 September 2005, 04:44
Robert johnsonI like Kudu horns that flare out. My guess on horn size is
#1picture 57"-58"
# 2 picture 60"
#3 picture 53"-54"

GeorgeSI think #1 is the largest of the three.
This is a 58 1/2" kudu I shot in Matetsi.

475GuyHey, George, that's some long hair you got there. Sorta like the BG's and the whole Disco-Duck look?
BTW, nice Kudu.

GeorgeSAww, you're just jealous 'cause I had long hair and have been on four safaris!

SevensI have no idea on how to judge kudu, but I do know what I want in one. I'm not partially to the 60" mark, just that it looks good. To me, that means deep curls with horns that are closer together. In my personnal opinion, I don't think wide kudu look that great. I guess if I had to take my pick on which one I like the best, it would be the second photo. He's closest to what I think a perfect kudu looks like.

RobertJrBeauty is in the eyes of the beholder!!
I like wide and old Kudu's with good ivory
rank 1-3-2
Length is in the tape measure!! Wide curls increase length and big bases help SCI scores
rank 2-3-1
They all are great trophies!!
Robert

HarrisI'd be happy to see any one of the three through my scope. My first choice would be the 2nd one though.
The price of knowledge is great but the price of ignorance is even greater.
02 September 2005, 06:54
Kyler HamannI think RobertJr ranked them correctly. #2 is the one that scores the best. All of them are fine trophies though.
To my eye the wide ones look good.
This bull that I took in Namibia was around 52".
The unusual thing about him was that he had a small piece of horn coming out of his nose above his chevron. The PH said he saw that once in a while. My hunting partner took a beautiful bull measuring around 55". I kept teasing him that he took a really nice bull. In fact, for a bull with
only TWO horns he should be really proud of it.

MacD37If all three were standing together, I'd shoot the one in picture no 2! The tape measure doesn't mean poot to me I shoot what looks right to me!
I would rank them #2 #3 #1

ceweNo 2 is the best looking, No 1 is the longest...maybe.
02 September 2005, 12:42
BoghossianNumber 1 looks fantastic with lotsa spread but tight curls and a small bell.
I am also guessing that 2 is the 60 incher, although both 1 and 3 can't be faulted!
02 September 2005, 12:54
fredj338My guess is also #2 for longest. I would love to have any of them in my scope.
Kyler, your bull & mine coul dbe twins right down to the "rhino" horn above the chevron. I need to get back to africa after another, better kudu bull.

WinkI'll go for good looking over score every time.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v448/WCR/KuduTrophy.jpgNow, I have no idea what my kudu scores but he was a fine looking mature animal.

<allen day>I like good looking kudu best, and consider any old bull that's over 55" to be a great trophy. My best kudu bulls measure 57" & 56".
Even so, if you seen a rather ugly bull that's 60" or over, it would be a prudent move to shoot him!
I certainly would.......... Sixty-inchers don't exactly grow on trees.

WinkIt's pretty hard to pass up a shot on any mature Kudu I would think. They all look splendid from 150 yards.

AtkinsonI would shoot any of the three but No. 2 should be the best score and to my mind is the most beatiful of the three.....
Mostly the largest Kudu have tight curls and a big hole down through the middle, and many of them are not particularly impressive to most folks....

new_guyI like the look of a wide spread.
02 September 2005, 22:25
NorthwayI would guess #2 and that is the one with the best looks to me.
02 September 2005, 22:29
FjoldI can't judge the length as I have no experience with Kudu but as far as preferences go. #1 and #3 are turning out at the tips and look wider but I like the looks of the deep curls on #2.

cable68I'd take any of those three, but if they were together I'd take #2. Wide enough spread, but not too wide.
Kyler and fred, add my kudu to the list of those with a horn coming out just above the chevron.

LorenzoOMUHONA,
Kudus ALWAYS look big for me, and I have hunted and see hunted very few of them to be an expert but for me the biggest one is the #1 .
I belong to Scruffy school

, I shoot whatever is running away or towards me despite it's size

Not special preferences for me, kudus always look great despite their horn shape.

AtkinsonThe turning out at the tips has been written as one of the things one looks for in trophy judgment of Kudus...However that is a pure crock, I have seen many 60 plus Kudu that did not turn out at the tips, that is a gene pool trait I have been told and I believe that...My best yet does not turn out, its on my web page.
I want a good spread and deep curls combined and balanced, No.1 looks like he has been streatched out, heated and pulled, but that type popular with most first time Americans, self included at one time, but the animals like no. 2 will soon be your favorite after a little Kudu hunting and talking with the Africans, who determined long ago what a proper Kudu looks like...

OMUHONALike I said, it is just for fun, so I will not reveal the true measurements.
Kudu # 1 is my own and the other two are from clients of mine.
Speciman # 1 and # 3 are what I call wall kudus, because they look good in any trophy room.
If # 2 was even curled it would have been the perfect kudu to my mind, because it has everything your looking for, even measurement.
I always find this topic interesting and clearly I am not the only one that still find big kudu intriging and kind of adictive.
I will post a photo of a 61 something inch kudu we took recently, when I have it developed.

GibsonI have yet to hunt Africa, but Kudu is at the top of my list, so any Kudu, particularly an old bull of anything over 50 inches would be a dream for me. But I really do prefer the deep curls of the second photo, and this is what I would be looking for in my first trip. Ivory tips don't hurt either.
George, that is one of the most beautiful kudu I have ever seen, this is the type of animal I would strive for. Deep curls with a beautiful dark coloration, with vivid stripes and mask.
