If you were limited to two Rifles what would they be?
If the wonderful govt decided you could only have two centerfire rifles what would they be.Mine would be my old Ruger 77 in 338 win mag and my Winchester model 70 in 416 rem mag.I think these two could handle anything.I just wish the onld Ruger was stainless I love the tang safety alot better than the model 70 safety. Its like shooting a nice double barrel.I think the 338 and 416 rem mag combo would handle any big game on this earth.I hope we are never limited to the # of toys we can have but we have demirats a coming.

30-06 & .375 H&H (or Ruger). How easy was that?

If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

Mine would be Win Mod 70 Super Express 375hh
and win Mod 70 Classic stainless in 30-06

Mine would be a 404 Jeff and a 6mm Rem AI.

dgr: Your combination is arguably the best combo for africa. If one stops to carefully analyze every conceivable animal out there, that combo's hard to beat. Even for long range shooting like for Mt. Nyala or the khalahari, the 338 with the right bullet can do the job and there's nothing a 416 can't handle. jorge

Just to be a bit different I would choose a 458 Lott and a 8 x 68S. Otherwise I think the 375 H&H and 30-06 combo is also super.

But then again the 338 and 416 as well this is more difficult to answer than asking what would your only rifle be if you could only have one. Confused And then at the moment I only have two rifles and they work just great as well the 375 H&H and 303 Brit.

The question could get more interesting if we would have had to answer the same question 40 years ago comparing all the equipment and reloading stuff we have today.

Mine would be my CZ 375 & Model 70 7mm Rem Mag.

I think it would have to be a .404J and a 30-06. Naw, to hell with it - 9.3x62 and a 25-06 - that ought to cover about anything I need. All CRF and based on the M98 action of course.

My choices would be my .375H&H and either my .25-06 or my 6.5 WSM. Yes, I know the 6.5 is a wildcat, but its a little more powerful than the .25, accurate, and "different."

First rifle is a 375 H&H (you'll only be carrying one rifle on your shoulder), which makes number 2 a difficult choice, probably a 300 H&H.

My Winchester Model 70 .375H&H, and my Remington 700FS .30-06.

These are the rifles I like best, as they have always worked well, shot well, and have been 'lucky' for me.

There are several combos I've used and could live with including:

300 H&H and 375 H&H

300 Win Mag and 416 Rigby

338 Win Mag and 416 Rigby

Give me one good rifle that can launch a 160 - 200 grain bullet at 2750+ FPS along with another good rifle that can launch a 300 - 400 grain bullet at 2450+ fps and I'll take on the world. (only one caveat, bullet SD has to be > .300)

Along the same line of questioning, which of the 375's: the traditional 375 H&H or the new smaller cartridge the Ruger 375,?? especially if my main interest is Plains game and not the Buff's or Elephants? drwes

Its really hard to choose between my 338-378 Weatherby which is just a super 338 but I can handle my 338 win mag ruger like shooting sheet.I have shot so much running game with it that its not funny. If I can hit deer at a full run with it and hogs and beears then only animals such as pronghorns would give me troubles.I do love my 338-378s but my 338 win mag Ruger model 77 is my favorite.I bought a bunch of these rifles and alot of extra parts .I am thinking of building a 416 Ruger on a old model 77 so its a matched set.I love the tang Safety and the barrel weight to shoot.

I have two Win Mod 70's, one in 300 H&H and the other in 375 H&H. They are nothing spectacular or special, just factory rifles with adequate scopes. They're not for sale at ANY PRICE. I can and do hunt the planet with both. If I were a reasonable person, I'd sEll all that other stuff, take the considerable amount of proceeds money, AND GO HUNTING SOMEWHERE!!!!!!!

That is fairly easy. My .243 and my .375.

The .243 for varminting & game up to deer. The .375 for everything else.

Two rifles for biggame? .375 H&H and 7 mm STW.
Two rifles for everything? .375 H&H and 22/250.

If it happened today:

Husky 98 in 9.3x62 and my 375 H&H T/C Encore (I figure the switchbarrel might be a loophole) and squirrel away a few barrels including a shotgun barrel.

Under this scenario I would encourage everyone to opt for a high capacity assault rifle and an RPG. It would obviously be time to revolt! Mad

I'm torn on this one. I hate it when these kinds of polls get posted! Confused

I'd keep my Brno .458 for sure.

But what CENTERFIRE would I keep as a second? Hmm, my Ruger .300 Win Mag comes to mind, as does my .270 Weatherby. Then again, something like a .223 would allow one to go out and plink all afternoon without bruising a shoulder or a wallet. Tough call.

Not possible to limit me to 2 rifles. I can't see me livimg without my Biesen 270 Ruger, Biesen Pre-64 Mod 70 375 H&H or my Searcy 470 double. They will have to find my third one.

I guess if I had to pick just two it would be my blued/wood .375 H&H and my stainless/plastic .375 H&H that would cover about everything I need to do. That way I'd have twice as much ammo.

Kyler

Win Model 70 in .375 H&H and Dakota 450 or Dakota 450 and AHR 600 OK

Sort of eliminates plains game, but covers most of the animals I love to hunt. Hope it never comes to this!

If I had to use only two rifles for everything world wide, then it wauld be two Mauser actioned bolt rifles, chambered for 243 winchester, and 375 H&H. That would cover everything from jackrabbit to ele with carefull shooting.

NOW! If you mean two rifles for big game, then the choice would be different. It would, then, be a 375H&H CRF bolt rifle, and a 450NE 3 1/4" double rifle. Both with QD scopes mounted! beer

This may be a little unorthodox but for me I'd choose my personal 375 H&H and my own 458 WM. The 375 is as light as most 30-06 or 270's and with the 270 TSX or 260 Accubonds it shoots as flats as the '06. The 458 with the 450's will do anything that the 416 will do with more frontal area and a heavier bullet. As far as safari goes these 2 together would handle everything plus overlap to cover the big stuff.

I have shot a feral cat and a coyote with my 338 plus 90 deer a 350 pound hog and a black bear. Its my automatic gun I pull the trigger and it falls dead.I almost shot a spruce grouse with it also.I would hate to think that we do ever get limited to two rifles.I already narrowed my rifles to 338 win mag and 416 rem mag .I have 12 338s and 6 416 rem mags.I sold the 458s,35 whelens ,270s a winchester feather weight, the 250-3000,the 375 winchesters excpt two of them.I could handle hunting with the 338 win mag and the 416 rem mag.I have a bunch of matched pairs in these two. That way I can share ammo with a friend if I share guns and if my lady friend goes hunting also.

Having never been to Africa I can speak with great authority. I've been meaning to take a picture of these two rifles for sometime, maybe this thread will make me. I would take my 1938 Winchester model 70 Supergrade 300 Magnum (H&H) and my 1938 Winchester model 70 standard grade 375 H&H with a factory 24" straight taper barrel. Both have undrilled rear bridges and are set up with Lyman 48s. I have some old Stith mounts so I could scope the 300 Magnum, with a Lyman Alaskan 2.5x of course!

As a straight up answer to your question, I'd pick the .375H&H and a .300 WM, but to add a twist to it, considering some countries have already limited the number of guns a citizen can have, I'd use the technique they have adopted to get around the limitation and keep a Blaser as one of my two so I could have most any caliber I wanted available to me.

A very easy decision for me. My Model 70 Winchester Custom from the Winchester shop in .358 STA for plains game, or whatever. The second would be my Model 70 Winchester in Safari Classic in .416 Remington. I would shoot North Fork bullets in both, just like I did in the Selous and have no worries. wave Good shooting.

Oops, didn't read the post. I see, two centerfire calibers.

375 H&H and something like a .308 (7x57; 7mm 08, etc.)

Jorge,

There's been several taken with that caliber the last few years. Not all of them at long range either. Wink

That said, here's another vote for the .30-06 and .375 H&H. They've worked for me more than once. I'm a very traditional guy.

I'd rather have a rifle & a shotgun. If that were possible, it would be my .375 H&H and my 12 ga. pump. Smiler If not, I'd want two .375 H&Hs.

For plains game I am taking a 300 Win Mag and a 260 Remington.

If I was going for dangerous game and plains game. 375 H&H and a 300 Win Mag.
