ZephyrElephant and Buffalo Hides
Has anyone had either or both Buff and Ele hides tanned and shipped from Zim? Thinking of bringing back a panel or two for gun cases. What was the approximate cost.
Thanks

bwanamrmElephant was done in Zim by Taxidermy Enterprises. Cost for 2 panels was around $350... much cheaper than in the States.

Tim HeraldI recently got a quote from the guy Buzz uses, Barry Price...
The cost of tanning dry salted Elephant into Export quality leather (any
colour)
would cost US$9,50 per square foot.
The Standard thickness is
1,8mm-2mm.
Ideal for Boots, wallets, belts Gun bags etc.

LionHunterI recently did business with Barry Price on Ele hide and do endorse him.

I have always had my hides - Ele, Buff, Sable, Kudu, Warthog, etc. - tanned in africa. Cheaper processing and less shipping cost. Have had boots and other products made here from those hides without issue.

MJinesCannot answer your question on thickness, but can say that I have used elephant hide that was tanned in Zim through whoever Buzz uses to have Dick Murray make me two cases and Dick said the hide was fine. Made two very nice scabbord style cases.

RichP470I wish I had done mine over in Zim. I think I paid $25-$30 per SF recently in the states and I had a quote up to $35.

Much, much cheaper to have the tanned and dyed hide shipped than the salted panels. Also, I think the quality of the leather tanning in Zim is better than here, particularly for the thicker hides like elephant.

We Are Sparta!I brought home an entire buff hide to be tanned in the US. The tannery was recommended by my taxidermist. They did a solid job but I suspect I havve $1000 tied up in the hide. Shipping is expensive as is tanning. I have not done the tanning locally but suspect they can do a good job with a good hide as they can use methods and chemicals we cannot use in the US. I would like to hear how this turns out.
