500grainsGanyana - penetration of 9.3mm bullets
Ganyana and others who have used 9.3mm solids on game,
Which of the following gives deeper penetration on elephant chest shots, assuming max velocity from a 9.3 x 62 rifle:
9.3 mm 286 gr. Woodleigh FMJ
9.3 mm 320 gr. Woodleigh FMJ
Thank you.

AtkinsonIn my 26" barrel gun the 320 gr. Woodleigh penitrates more than any other bullet of conventional design, in other words except for the monometals....
In a short barrel gun I suspect the 286 would maybe be better as the velocity is a good deal less..the 9.3x62 takes to a long tube like a duck to water....
I have had great luck with the 320 grs bullets on Buffalo with both soft and solid, the softs stop expanded very large on the off side skin and the solids pass through...
But the GS Customs FN solid is the best of all and the HP are excellent and out penitrate any other bullets that I have tried...I suspect the Northforks are just as good, they are in all the calibers I have tried, but I have not shot buffalo with them as yet...

GanyanaHave never tried the 320grn
I like my soft point bullets to land at over 2250fps especially on cats but also to some extent on buff- therefore I load my softs (Stuart 284grn flat points to shoot to the same point of impact as the 286grn woodleighs. It is also the reason I stopped using the 295grn TUG's- couldn't get everything shooting together.
My origninal Mauser has a 23" barrel and by Belgian rifle has a 24" barrel.
A 286grn Woodleigh exits by mauser at 2380fps (ave) and will penetrate enough for a quatering away, or quatering on brain shot. More I cannot ask.

butchloconly thing I shot with a 9.3 solid was a klipspringer with a 300 gr barnes in 9.3x74R and guess what - complete penetration... in one eye and out the back of his head.
