Caprivi Strip In August
I'll be hunting in the Caprivi Strip with Vaughan Fulton for Cape Buffalo in mid August of 2008. Has anyone here hunted in the Caprivi that time of year, so I have an idea what to expect as far as weather conditions, insects, etc. What would you suggest I take along as far as foot wear, clothing, insect repelent, and any other goodies you think are necessary.

Mike,

congratulations! I hunted with Vaughn in 2006 in August. It was a terrific hunt and the weather was 45F degrees in am and rose to 75-80 in day. A light jacket, light sweater, and undershirt was all that was needed. During the day, I peeled from jacket, to shirt, and during the walk would peel out of outer layer to undershirt.

There are no insects. We had a problem with mice/moles but solved it with liberal applications of sticky rodent goo.

You need a good walking shoe with gusseted tongue and a gaiter. I got gaiter s from REI. Lightweight, short ones that were just the thing.

Vaughn's camp was very well positioned, stocked and set up. I did not need a fraction of the stuff I brought for camp comfort.

I am so glad for you. You have such a rich experience in front of you. Vaughn is a great ph. Take tons of pics and enjoy the moment which is passing.

Vaughn and guys enjoyed the individual life saver candies. Take plenty of those with you. A nice bottle of single malt will be a nice donation to the collection Vaughn has. Best of luck to you. Kudude

Kudude, thanks for the reply. I hunted plains game with Vaughan two years ago, in his area next to Etosha, and I came away from that hunt thinking I'll be hard pressed to ever find a finer PH, or a finer run outfit. He's definitely tops. www.fultonclassicsafaris.com

Mike, congratulations! And best of luck on the buff.

What rifle and ammo are you planning to use?

For the Buffalo, I'll use my Ruger Bolt Action in 416 Rigby, with handloaded 410 grain Woodleigh softs, and solids.

For plains game, and possibly Hippo, I'll go with my Custom Model 70 in 375 Ackley shooting 270 grain Barnes XLCs.

Mike,

Congradulations on the hunt. My dad and I are hunting with Vaughn for buffalo just before you are. We are doing back to back 7 day buffalo hunts starting at the end of July and running into August.

I only wish it wasn't a year and a half away.

I just posted some photos from my trip with Vaughn in November of 2006. We had a great time and saw lots of Buffalo.

Brett,

I did see plenty of plains game, but it was all on the other side of the Chobe. I was on the last hunt of the year and the only animals I saw were Buffalo, Hippo, Croc, Zebra and Elephant. I saw some Impala horns in the hide area so I know they are in the area, but I never saw any.
