30-06 for plains game

Is 30-06 good caliber for plains game? or is it too weak for big antelopes? for example for oryx and eland!

I shot 13 animals including eland, oryx and kudu with the .06. No problems at all with just 180 gr NP.

The .30-06 is a fine plains game cartridge, although a bit light for oryx and eland (in my opinion; I used a .375H&H for those animals).

If you are a good game shot, use proper controlled-expansion bullets, and choose your shots carefully, it should do.

30-06 will be fine. If you have a 375 H&H, use it on the Eland or borrow one from your ph, that is one big animal. Gemsbuck is a tough one too, but I would be comfortable shooting one again with the '06.

half of the hunters in Southern Africa uses the 30-06 and it works fine, but I prefer my 300 Winchester, and best of all my 9.3x62 mauser.

Gentlemen,

For most plains game hunting situations, especially inside 200-250 yards, the .30-06 is hard to beat. Load a 220 gr. Nosler partition to 2400 fps, and not much, including eland or oryx, is going to get away if you place your shot correctly.

The .30-06 should be excellent for plainsgame, but as good as it is, the .300 magnums are better if you can shoot 'em.......

I agree with Allen, the 06 is ample but I also prefer the 300 H&H or better yet a 375 or 338 for Eland and Gemsbok...but I take the shots as they come. With an 06 I would only take Eland broadside or at a slight angle. I'd rather be overgunned if recoil isn't in the equation.

I know of one eland that was killed with a " portuguese hart shot" using a 243 Winchester(GS bullet) and I personallty dropped a wounded one with a 32 cal. revolver fired at about three metres (f.m.j. brain shot from behind) but I suggest using a 9.3 x 62 or something similar.

The 30 06 is fine for all antelopes from Springbok to Gemsbok size and cats, lion included.

The Nosler partitions bullets are very good at medium to long distances but I had occasional failures at the shortest ranges.

Now I hunt with GS monometal.
