TWO conservancies in the Kavango Region have so far jointly generated N$142 000 through trophy hunting.

Dorothy Wamunyima, the co-ordinator for the Every River Has Its People project, which is implementing the Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) programme in the region, says these are the George Mukoya and Muduva Nyangana conservancies.

The two conservancies, which are now jointly called Khaudum North Complex (KNC), are in the Gcricku District, north of Khaudum.

They were granted trophy-hunting quotas by the Ministry of Environment.

Together with the Joseph Mbambangandu and Shamungwa conservancies, they were launched by Environment Minister Willem Konjore in February last year.

The Joseph Mbambangandu conservancy is generating an income from the Mbamba Campsite.

Every River Has Its People is a project of the Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF), working hand in hand with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and traditional authorities.

Communal conservancies are being established under the CBNRM programme of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, which gives rights to rural communities to manage and benefit from natural resources in their environments in a sustainable manner.
