Bud MeadowsMy wife and I had a similar elephant attack in 2012 while driving in Etosha just west of Halali camp. A herd of elephants blocked our way so we just stopped and took a couple of pictures from our Toyota Landcruiser. Without warning, the herd bull charged us from about 100 yards away. I threw the car into reverse gear and floored the gas. Despite my efforts, the bull was gaining on us and got within 50 yards. He finally gave up the chase and stayed in the middle of the road blocking our way. Finally a large truck driven by natives came along, honked their horn and drove straight at the bull. He finally backed down and we were able to proceed. My wife and I were in agreement that it was the scariest moment of our lives.

lavacaElephants are funny. Unpredictable.
This August/September in Lukwati, we were charged by a tuskless cow while in the car. This year was really wet and we spent a lot of time stuck, but fortunately, at that particular time we could drive and were able to outrun her. My kidneys took a beating.
I've seen a number of bluff charges and this was not one. She was dead serious and if she had caught the car, I'm sure the results wouldn't have been much different.
I'm glad we weren't on foot or we'd have had to put her down.

Use Enough GunI've had to outrun eles in hunting vehicles or cars on three different occasions. They are much faster than one would think!

lavacaWell isn't that what you're doing when you are hunting them? A lot of species get the message somehow. How many times have you seen a sable, or a zebra just stand there and look at you when you weren't hunting them? But Elephant don't seem to care whether you are hunting them or not.
