ceweAfton House or...?
Hi,
I´ll be travelling to SA in April and thought I might spend a few days in Jo:burg before I start hunting. A lot of people have spoken well of Afton House but has anyone tried other alternatives?
I tried emailing AH the other day but so far no answer.

jdollari have stayed there 3 times while passing through Joburg and loved it . the owners are very nice people and meet you at the airport if you send them your flight info. it is also very convenient- less than 10 min. drive from the airport

UplandhunterWe stayed at the Farm Inn this last summer. Great place to stay. The only problem I had was sleeping through the roaring lions they have on the property. I would highly recomend staying there.

AndyCewe,
I stayed at Afton house which was arranged and recommended by Kathi at wild Travel, and others here on AR.
Coming from the West coast of USA like I was, I really enjoyed a brief layover at AH prior to going onto Zimbabwe later that same evening to shower, shave, have a square meal, and take a nap.
Made my trip much more enjoyable, and after staying in a hunter friendly B and B in Harare recommended by my PH later that night, I arrived at Dande North ready to go hunting.

N E 450 No2I have always stayed 2 nights at the Afton House on all 3 of my Safaris. The extra day gives you some shopping time and also allows any lost baggage time to catch up with you.
The SAPS people know Louis from the Afton House and I think that helps. Also Louis knows the best places to eat and shop.
Someone will take you there and bring you back. I highly recommend them.
PS be sure and eat dinner at the Ocean Basket.
The "Italian Resturant is also excellent, it is owned by a real man fron Italy

Russ GouldWherever you stay, Joburg is kind of like the wild west these days without the sheriff. So be careful.

As you know I and my family stayed at Afton before we went off to Maun. Afton is great if you stay one night and then have a transfer to another place. Two nights is ok, but three.. -you might want to see something else.
My "new base" while working in the jo-burg/Pretoria area is River Meadow Manor, the place is fantastic and even their cheapest rooms of very high class.
Contact Bonnie

and ask her for a charge. They will arrange pick up at Jan Smuts and also arrange drives to the places you want, and by the way River Manor is just some 200 meters from the Jan Smuts old estate which now is a museum.
