price of soft gun case at SCI

I need a soft gun case for my target rifle and was thinking of picking one up at the SCI show.Are prices there cheaper compared to Brownell's or other online stores? I will be saving on shipping cost-I know that.

Your question is a bit like asking, "how much does a car cost?".

Are you looking for a high end, nearly indestructible case like Americase, Pelican etc.? Those should run a few hundred dollars and be well worth it depending on your expected usage (travel). If you are just looking for something for trips to/from the range, a cheaper low end plastic case might suffice.

Suspect you'll find the complete range of candidates at the show...

I am looking for a soft case.Something around 40 dollars.I think Boyt's sell for 50 or 60 online.I found something nice at Ace gun case but shipping costs more than the case.

The soft cases I have seen at SCI were usually fancy leather jobs.

If you are looking for a bargain, it won't be that kind of thing...they have to haul it there and display it.

Most will be custom stuff or stuff for traveling hunters. You are better for getting a cheap soft case at home if that is what you are looking for...or else ride down to a Walmart or other sporting goods stores while you are in vegas.

Shootaway, I use two types of soft cases for different purposes. One type case is used for gently transporting guns around the range and to and from local hunting and shooting areas. The other cases I use to protect guns when I ship them or when I pack them in a hard case for travel.

For the fist purpose I want a case that is durable, well made case, and well padded. So, I use Boydt type or a leather type case. For the second purpose, I use the cheapest thing I can find at WalMart, a gun show, or for cheap shipping a few at a time online.

There is a WalMart just down the road from the SCI convention. For something better but under $100 I suggest going online.

What you are describing is a gun slip for storing and a gun case for transport to the range.I spend 40 dollars on a cheap nylon model that is coming apart after a couple of years.I need a shotgun size case 50-54 inches.There are some awesome slips at Ace priced cheap.I need another slip for my custom rifle only problem is the slip costs 7 bucks and it costs 40 to ship it.

I bought each of my sons a Boyt soft rifle case at Bass Pro Shops for Christmas. Fits a rifle with a 26" barrel and a relatively large scope. Lifetime warranty, nice workmanship.

I have a couple KNJ cases and really like them - well padded, durable materials, and my favorite, made in the USA. Their website isn't that great, but if you see them at the show, I recommend checking them over real close. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

If I am not mistaken Boyts use a breathable cotton padding and the bulldog case uses closed cell foam.I like natural materials but I am concerned that they will hold moisture.

Use Enough Gun

I agree with Ted Thorn. I have two green bulldog gun cases that have been with me on 12 safaris, plus 3 trips to Mexico, and they have stored and protected all of my rifles while in transit and while hunting. I stored the rifles in them in the TuffPak while flying, and then used them daily on the truck while out hunting.

P.S. In offering my humble recommendation, please note that I think that I possibly have every gun case known to mankind (custom and/or otherwise).

I packed my rifle inside a Bulldog case and then placed it inside my Pelican for my one and only trip to South Africa.

I then used the Bulldog the two weeks my wife and I hunted.

I spray the exterior with Atsko water seal and water runs off like you wouldn't believe....but a can of this stuff can literally make Carhart cotton work wear into rain gear. I use the crap out of the stuff on all of my outdoor and camping gear.

I don't disagree with the sentiment, but everything I've bought from Red Ox has held up extremely well over a long period of time. I have a duffle that has been on 2 dozen flights or more and although it's beat up it's still going strong. I also have a backpack that has seen the same abuse. I couldn't be more pleased with their products...

Ditto. Their gun slips (Flat Dog) pack easily and hold up great. I also like their small bags (Lil Roy) for ammo and the like. Wish they still showed at DSC.

I checked out the Red Ox soft case on their site and from what I see it has a # 10 YKK coil zipper.I bought this zipper for a case I had made.The zipper cost me 12 dollars.I see they use neoprene as their insulation/padding material.Neoprene is expensive but this seems to be the only point where they can justify a higher price.If one is willing to pay 200 dollars because they feel they need neoprene padding good for them.I don't think it is a smart buy.There must be a huge mark up on that case.

Don't buy it then.

You're wasting your breath with any Red Oxx bashing. They make absolute top shelf products, back them with top shelf service and warranties, and will never leave you hanging. That's what you pay for, and the things I've bought from them I am extremely pleased with.
