Those are some nice pics of various buffs. Where'd you snatch these pics? One of these days....

They tend to get thicker and harder as the buffalo ages. Its bettergame management to shoot the old geezers with thick bosses since they have passed on their genes.

500 Grains,

Thanks so much. Those pics were superb! They certainly leave no doubt as to what I should be looking for! Thanks Hugh

Hi Folks,
Please excuse my ignorance. A beginners question here. I keep reading about buffalo with hard or soft bosses. How do tell by looking at them? I suppose the hard bosses are more desireable. Are these the bosses that are totally seamed together in the center with no hair / scalp in between? Thanks. Hugh

Yes, as a matter of fact, they are. Though, if you have any doubts, ask the PH. In addition to hard bosses, I always look for beat up, fringed ears; well rounded, worn horn tips, bald patches on the hide and evidence of a really terrible attitude!

Hugh,

Soft bosses will have a "peach fuzz" look to them, with the fine hairs often showing white, depending on the light. It is unlikely that a conscientious PH will let you shoot a soft bossed bull, but mistakes happen sometimes. Also look for worn tips and deep drop to the horns, which are other good signs of age.

Who is that guy in the 3rd photo? Oh yeah, soft bosses.
