What is the funkiest critter that you have hunted?

I was just pondering about such a subject. An antbear is certainly an odd looking varmint. I have not yet hunted a brown hyena but I reckon that beast might just give a person the creeps.

On all the hunts that I have done - tapir in the hot dank jungles of Bolivia would win for me.

If you mean strange looking, I suppose eelpout with a fishing spear. Hook and line is cheating!

Have shot brown hyena - very 'spooky' animal but not really 'funky' in my book. I call BS on CharlieB's eelpout as that is 'fishing' and not 'funky hunting'!

I find gerenuk exceptionally funky but I have never hunted one....

I am going to go with Dassie! Related to elephants, importable into the USA, very difficult to track and they require perfect shot placement like on a croc but with a mini caliber or you loose them in the cracks and crevasses ! Believe me I know from experience!

I was hunting in the Zambezi Valley. Hunting Buffalo and Lion. After all the time I have lived and hunted in Africa I stumbled on a Pangolin.I picked it up and it rolled into a ball.Took a couple pics and put him down.pretty Cool!

Brown Hyena look more evil than the Spotted Hyena. Wish that we could import them into the United States, as I have seen more Browns than Spotteds on my 16 African Safaris. But, back to the question. For me it was a Coatimundi in Mexico.

I would say bullfrogs.

Used to hit them behind the eyes with a .22, which blew them in half, then cut off and skin their legs, sautée them in garlic and butter and have a feast.

Of course, this was not in Africa.

I don't think I have ever seen a frog in Africa.

My wife asked me to shoot a big Tom cat that was coming in at night and harassing her cat. I went out to the garden and amongst the flowers, I spotted the feline and shot it in the chest with a .22 at 5 feet and the fucking thing charged me!

I think hyrax / dassie would be a good one. I had always wanted to hunt them but never had a chance until one afternoon on Lake Kariba, there were bunches of them on the rocks around the lake. Went to the Parks station and bought 10 permits at $10 each. Got in a boat with a shotgun, and went hyrax hunting. Shot 6 of them and had one "wounded and lost" because a pellet hit him in the leg. Another guy in camp laughed at taking an afternoon off to hunt hyrax instead of " big game".
The other "funky" critter hunt was feral camel in the Australian Outback.

Never underestimate a cat. Friends of mine had the policy that all feral animals on their farm to be shot on sight. I shot a house cat running past me at 30m dead centre with a 375H&H, it continued running for 50m before giving up the ghost.

I was hunting red deer in Argentina at the peak of the roar one year. Fantastic experience. I noticed these ginormous rodents hopping around and found out that they were Maras. One of the 5 largest rodents in the `world.

So, of course, I decided that I was low on the varmints and needed one badly. The cook took me out and I whacked one of the critters and then insisted that I must have it for supper.

The cook did prepare the little beast for us but absolutely refused to try it himself.

His words, ' I won't eat anything that looks like it came from Chernobyl.'

Me and my son were out at night in South Africa in the Karoo calling in Jackals and I shot a great huge porcupine a jackal and one of those strange tan things that look like a squirrel but have rabbit ears and hind legs. Forgot what they are called got a pic of it though…….Very strange creature and are all over the place

During a drought here in Houston, the big rats came up through the storm drains from the bayous and ended up in our garage. We're talking big rats. I spread a little flour to track their movements and set traps at pinch points. Caught a lot of them, but learned that once a trap had killed, you might as well throw it away. (peanut butter and bacon is the best bait). You can't boil it or anything. They'll never come back. Shot one running across the back of the garage with an air rifle. And killed one with a hoe. Took some months to eradicate them. But it was hunting. Couldn't use poison because of the dogs.

I have shot about 7 or 8 dassies. They are wierd!

Ive eaten Pangolin in the jungle, when left out there. A couple of locals at an artisanal gold working had killed it, had it with rice, bloody boney. But we had bought nothing and they let us sleep on the floor of their hut.

In the 1970's l was told by a couple of older deer cullers (over 30 and you were geriatric) that they had been on wallaby control on Kawau Island in the early 1960's and shot a lot of "Little Brown wallabies. In 1965 they were recognised as Parma wallabies believed extinct in their native Australia since the nineteenth century.
