The 458's
Given improvements in factory 458 win mag ammunition, is there a real advantage to the 458 Lott? Also please consider that both the 458's will be used at distances of 50 yards or less.

If your parents didn't have any children chances are you won't either.

DD.....do a search of topics on here. This has been discussed ad nauseam on here.

My two cents. I have had both. The one I still have is the .458 Win Mag.

Yes, you can shoot both cartridges in the Lott, but not the reverse. That's about it.

If you handload, using the Lott gives you the ability to send a 500gr bullet at 1900 fps, 2350 fps, or at whatever level of recoil you find tolerable.

Both hit pretty hard. I have had both, loaded them up and down, shot them, then sold them....
I am wuss in terms of recoil tolerance...

I like it when the PH's carry one, but I go a little softer...

I’m with Ross on this. I used to have a 458 Winchester and a 470 NE. Both were very good. But these days I hunt with a 416 Hoffman or 375 H&H. Alan carry’s a 450 Ackley, which I have no interest in shooting as it’s comparable to a 460 Weatherby, which is what his dad, Roy, carried.

450 grs @ 2,225 fps 458 Win Mag is about as much as I want to shoot!

Austin Hunter, drop down to the 404 Hammer Bullet at 2460 fps and it will do everything you want at less recoil

Like some of the above, I too own a couple 458 Lotts, (Dakota Safari & Ruger RSM), and I’ve taken a couple of Buffalo with them, using 500 gr. SAFs. I like it a lot (no pun). I also own a 505 Gibbs, and I stoke it with 600 gr. Woodleigh softs and solids.

However, today I am 72 yrs. old, and my days with the Gibbs are definitely over. I have fallen in love with my 404 Jeffery for the past five safaris, and today, I am shooting 430 gr. NFs in it. This level of recoil is now my happy place!

But I have not given up yet on my 458 Lotts. Still a great killer, with acceptable recoil. YMMV

The 458 Winchester Magnum has been performing well ever since it was created.

But, there are many other cartridges better than it.

True, but the same thing could be said of the 45acp

The .458 win velocity with 500 grain bullet is 2087 fps. The 458 Lott velocity is 2206 fps. Case capacity is 64.2/75.8. Cartridge over all length is 3.34"/ 3.6". If you lengthen the throat on a 458 win and load it to 3.6" you will get the same velocity. Use a Lee factory crimp die and you will not need to consider the location of bullet cannelure. This has all been explained by member 458winchester. You need to decide if 100 fps increase is worth the effort. More and less expensive rifles available in 458 win than 458 Lott.
