Another Safari Finished
Just on our way back to Jo'burg for the flight back to UK.

We've had ten days of excellent wing shooting in the Free state and I have a rake of photos to post.

I was hoping to post some as we went along but unfortunately tinternet signals hadn't reached our location so I've just logged on in the car.

For those that like the stats, we shot over 3,500 head over 10 days between 5-6 of us and used 7,500 cartridges. We took a total of 15 species I think.

Regardless of all that the most important thing was hunting with old friends and meeting new ones. We had a lot of fun, my "taliban" scarf got me a lot of stick but the beers were all cold so that made it bearable.

Here's a couple of pics to start with

Hey Mike,

The big Chickens were really quite something. The size of our team allowed for us to do some driven shooting which is something I do a lot of here but not too much abroad. I really was surprised at how well they flew on the flat lands of the free state, as I know estates here that don't show pheasants that good on better terrain.

We've already booked for next year so the calender is marked up!!

An interesting comment. In the team we had 4 browning O/U's being shot, a purdey and Dig's 1870's hammergun and a rizzini. All of the four brownings showed problems ranging from minor dismantaling/reassembally issues through to complete or partial failure. The forend hook on the rizzini had already detached itself prior t the hunt so the forend was held on with cable ties.

I have always been a big fan of shooting brownings, but some of the problems were repeated accross different guns. I will be looking for a decent english SxS for next years hunt as we have never had one fail in the last 4 years of hunting with them.

Highly recommend a good Webley & Scott, or an old Greener if you can pick them up.

Man, I love wingshooting... seems you fine fellows had some excellent sport. Well done!

Surprised about the Brownings... have shot several thousand rounds through mine at clays and fowl with nary a problem. You never know until you torture them...

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

That's about right. I've shot Brownings all my life as my dad was a big fan of them too. His B2G's are still going strong after 40 years. I'm not sure what it is but I think a lot of people make the mistake of over oiling their guns when they are in arid dusty locations. The dust congeals with the oils and makes for tighter fitting. I think this is what made form both my guns struggling to remove the fore-ends.

The Greeners are indeed a very nice gun and I have been toying with adding one to the cabinet for some time. There are a couple of options out there but time now to make my mind up.

More pics coming soon.
