The 550grn Woodleigh solids out of the 458Lott would be my pick.
I would hope for low pressure at 2200fps.

From my experience penetration would be very similar between the two but the shock affect (stopping power) of the 550 grain will be noticeably greater. Both will work fine but I am a believer in heavy for caliber bullets for elephant.

I shoot 500's in my .458 Lott - Barnes X and Barnes Solids. I carried these and (much to my chagrin) Hornady's solids and softs for elephant and buffalo in Zim last year.

The 550's. Closer to a .500 NE (570 grains at 2150 fps) and that is a proven jumbo killer.

I voted for the 550, because I think it's the better choice of the two offered.

But if I had my druthers, I'd go with a 480 or 500 grain solid, such as the Woodleigh, or a Barnes banded monolithic 500 grain solid, with as much speed as I could get at sane pressures.

If one ascribes to the "momentum kills" school of thought, such as did John Taylor, then, at the same muzzle energies, the 550 gr. bullet delivers more momentum than does the 450 gr. bullet.

Bwanna and I hunt with the same .458 Lott ammo, handloaded by the same man, John, of Safari Arms in New York.

Both loads would kill the elephant.

I am not sure if you shoot 100 elephants with ecah loads would you eb able to draw any conculisiuon of which one kills any better.

On ele- you will get a quicker knock down with the heavier bullet. I used the .450grn, because for cats i want velocity to be over 2250fps and I think I do for buff as well, so one load for all occasions
