I recall this question having been asked recently, but forgot the concensus answer. My ele hunt has suddenly materialised and I don't have much time to source more bullets here in NZ. I have stock of the old Hornady steel jacketed solids (magnet tested) and some of the newer ones (labelled 'encapsulated' with a 'brassy' finish and some sort of metallic disc at the base) - which are likely to be the toughest? I am likely to be using 410gr GSC FN monolithics for the first shot but haven't got the 'intestinal fortitude' to use flatnoses for follow-up as I can't bring myself to trust flatnose feeding(it seems 'unnatural, somehow').

Facts:



1) I haven't used the old or new Hornady's.



2) My son used the new Hornady's to take a buff and an ele. Worked fine.



3) There has bever been any game taken, anywhere in the world, before the advent of flat-nosed bullets.

The flat nose solid is a big improvment over the round nose bullet IMO, and its monolithic and that is also an improvment...

I consider Johan Calitz the ultimate source of information when it comes to shooting elephant and the only bullet he uses today is the the GS flat nose solid in his .470..I know he broke an elephants hip and the bullet continued to get complete body penetration in a straight line on on a big bull that had been wounded..That is outstanding...

I am surprised that you finally gave up on black powder and round balls for elephant hunting as many of them have been killed with these fine old guns! but hey I am as guilty of such statements as you are!
