I hunted once for one day on their properties guided by Johan's brother, Dirk. (Dirk is a part time bowhunting outfitter, a real purist, who offers free range hunting on his ranch - only takes out two hunters at a time during dark moons only. Dirk sometimes takes clients to Johan's place for game that is not native to the area)

I understand that Johan operates a large high fenced operation with a complete suite of game including black rhino (Johan apparently was part of the original conservation project where breeding pairs were given to outfitters ages ago).

Johan's wife Effie is or used to be active in the leadership Namibia Professional Hunters Association. I believe Effie is the sister of Gunter Heimstat from Holstein.

That's about all I can add. In general, it seems to be a responsible, well established, blue chip Namibian operation with recourse if any problems should arise.

Hope this helps.

While at the SCI show in Reno we talked to them about a possible hunt in 2009.Part of their property was high fence but they also have a large free range area for Kudu and Gemsbok with a tented camp . In the Hunting Report news letter that we subscribe to there is a report by a hunter that hunted with them in 2006.It was a positive report. We also have friends that told us about some people that they know in Chicago that hunted with them and had a great hunt taking a large Leopard. Hopefully this has been of help to you.

TWL,

Johan and Elfie are great people and their operation is very professional.

We book hunts for them in Mexico and are actually sending them three different groups this year.

Their main lodge is in an area of about 30,000 acres and they also have a very good tented camp further north (Near Etosha) in an area of about 50,000 acres.

Genetics are very good in their areas and a few hunters from mexico have come back with 60" plus kudus among other top scoring trophies.

Facilities, equipment, PH and staff are all great, not to mention the hospitality.

I would highly recommend them.

My wife and I hunted on Omatako Ranch in June 2002, and we had a great time. Friendly hosts, good food, and most important, great hunting. All hunting was walk and stalk, except when looking for warthogs, when we used towers. I shot oryx, hartebeest, warthog, Hartmann's zebra, jackal, caracal and two springboks. We recommend Omatako without hesitation.
