My First Buffalo

SaeedMy First Buffalo
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I was looking through my old photoes, and came across this picture.
This was the first buffalo I have shot, in Deka, Zimbabwe in 1982.
I used a Remington 700 Safari in 375 H&H, and Winchester 300 grain FMJ bullets.
Our tented cam was by a waterhole, and we left early afternoon to look for buffalo. We found the tracks of some bulls, and followed them.
They headed straight to the waterhole by our camp!
In fact, Rene, Roy's wife, and her two kids, Alan and Diana were watching the buffalo drinking less than 100 yards away!
When all of s sudden, there was a bang, and the buffalo running back into the bush.
Being new at this, I somehow managed to force 3 rounds into th magazine, and one into the chamber.
As I fired at the buffalo, which was about 30 yards away, the magazine bottom opened, spilling all the ammo on the ground!
I managed to chamber one round, and ran after the shot buffalo! He ran a few yards, and stopped, with his head down. Another bullet put him down.

ozhunterSome people think we take trophy's & photos of them as an ego thing. I just find them a great way to bring up great memories of past times.
This is a great example

yukon deltaInteresting story. Nothing like dumping your magazine on the first buff! I know you haven't really kept track of the buff you have shot but what's the ballpark number...120...150...?

PalmerIt must have been pretty close to dark when you were running him down.

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

SaeedYes it was getting a bit late.
In fact, I remember I could barely see the bull after he was shot and ran off into the bush.

Michael RobinsonSaeed, that's a great, old gray-faced bull.
Old photos can really bring back the memories.
BTW, is that one of those rare mountain buffalo?
It seems that you shot him on a very steep grade!

llamapackerGreat story. It is a pleasure to see "how it all started". Like so many excellent threads here, it makes me remember my first buffalo, etc. Thanks for refreshing the memories.

Walter, I don't think Saeed will appreciate your posting under his account...

Hunting: I'd kill to participate.
To a large animal, a little late, not because I belonged to the group when you put this post, but I congratulate you. Hopefully someday I can hang a photograph with a large animal like yours, or an eland, or a kudu or a Nyala or a small dik-dik.
Sincerely,
Oscar.

Incidentally, I do not think the calibre 375 suitable for a buffalo hunt, but in the light that is in good hands doing his job (I have a Ceska in that caliber and I have a dream with Ceska in the caliber 416 or 458).
Regards,
Oscar.
