Anyone have experience with these? They look easy to pack, but my question is how well do they protect the rifle banging around in a metal gun rack in the back of the Cruiser all day long? Is there enough padding to protect the rifle? Thanks.

We use the Red Oxx Flat Dog on the river for croc and hippo and it works great, but we use the Red Oxx Gunrunner case in the back of the truck as it offers more padding and protection. It takes up slightly more room in your check in , but it is sure nice to know your rifle is snug and safe as you crash along through Africa.

Would someone please post a picture or web site address of the gun racks?

They offer minimal protection as far as bangs and bumps go but keep the dust off. They are the perfect soft case inside a Tuffpack especially if you are packing more than one rifle into it. We used them in Africa with no complaints although we are just bolt rifle trash so if you have an upscale double, you may want more protection.

I have used them extensively and have had no problems with them. They are easier to pack than a conventional soft guncase and I have used them on everything from my ugly synthetic bigbores to my custom guns and never had a scratch on any rifle. Like em so much I bought another at the DSC a month or so ago...

I have used them several times and have never had a problem with my guns getting scratched. They roll up quite nicely and fit into your luggage and do not take up much room.

I love them, and have about 10. When I am taking a bunch of rifles out to shoot long range at the ranch, they protect just fine in the back of the jeep.

They fold up small, weigh little and are easy to use. They won't protect from major trauma, but probably do as good a job as most non-overstuffed soft cases.

most gunracks are rubberised and they are a very easy option if you dont want to go for the full blown gunrunner - i have had lots of guys bring them on safari and they work well

I have one that I used on a trip to Zambia. I like using them when transporting a rifle to and from the range. When hunting in Africa I perfer a zipper case unsipped with the rifle laying in the case in the gun rack.

Thanks for the feedback fellows. I have taken other soft cases before but they take up so damn much room I was looking for a less bulky option. Dick Murray makes a light weight leather slip but it sure seems thin to me.

Mike I picked up a buffalo leather padded case at the Sportsman's Paradise in Harare for $200. It was what Rex has used on his bakkie for years and it's wonderful. I wish I had bought two! I may have to make another trip just to get another one or find a way to ship one back.

I have two of those. Problem is they're heavy and when you put guns in the tuffpack with them the TP is over 50#. For that reason, I've never taken them with me on a trip. I love them for around home. One would be doable in a tuffpack, if you were only taking one rifle.

Vaughan, not sure about the metal gun rack - I don't even like to think about that!

It's a good case. I have been using them for a few years now. MJines, they are soft and flexible, and easy to pack, but still pretty damned tough. I do recommend them as a good soft case for safari purposes.

Vaughan, you may remember (or not!) that Brett's crew knocked my custom pre-64 Winchester .375 with the Swarovski scope on it flat down from vertical onto a hard surface (my fault!) and this case protected the rifle and the scope from any damage or dislocation.

No harm, no foul and no change in zero.

For a rack, I like the ski holders, the rubber kind. They can be attached to the interior handhold on the dashboard, or on the truck bed's superstructure. The rifle stocks can be protected with some kind of pad placed beneath the rifles' buttstocks.

Not sure who makes these, but they are the best I have seen or used and I will find out for you if you want me to do that.

On the ski racks - I think they're French or Swiss, or maybe German made. Hell, they could be Tibetan or possibly Nepalese now that I think of it.
