CZ 458 Double
I bought this CZ Model 589 new 3 years ago and have worked up and fired a few 458 Win Mag rounds reduced to 45-70 velocities, and now am curious if this rifle would have good applications in Africa.

It weighs 9 pounds and has 22 inch barrels and is 36 inches OAL. It came with an official target from the CZ factory with a 4 shot group in the black of a 4 inch circle at 150 meters. Group size was 3.5 inches with iron sights.

When closing the action to battery the safety is off.

Any thoughts on applications in Africa? Thanks!

Rimless cartridges are not the best idea in a double rifle if used for dangerous game. Nor is an over and under. I believe CZ eventually realized this and ceased further production. Your rifle is now a collector's item.

Just for clarity
What level of 45-70 (trapdoor, lever action, ruger #1)?

Alf,

I too have found O/U's easier to shoot then S/S's. However, since I will be seeing the chambers only with peripheral vision during a DG reload, I would prefer to see both chambers. You can load an O/U just as fast with practice, but you really don't see the lower chamber when inserting the cartridges.

Hello from down South

I have a buddy in Tanzania, Guy Rowe who owns and uses his doble o/u Brno (CZ) on a dailey basis and without any problems on dangerous game. And to all you 458 Win Mag bashers, he only uses factory ammo, i.e Federal and Remington so all goes to show that is all that is necessary.

Alf,
my thoughts on the o/u vs sxs

1: *I* prefer the board sightplain offered by two barrels in close range

2: I shoot a O/u MORE accurately, at 50 and 100... becuase I don't TILT it from time to time

3: the british prefered SxS... they wrote the books... the continitals prefered O/U... and they didn't write the books *I* have read (recognizing my limited experience with reading only english and some german)

As for there not being a niche for the double... well, that's just bullshit. If it had been 470 ne, sxs, and 3500 instead of the listed 2200 US, they couldn't have kept them on the shelf...

in fact, they make, every day, their own line of ou doubles and cape/combo guns

http://pdmall.com/CZC/shotgu~1.htm

and eaa makes and sells the once valmet line of cheap ou...

The deal was that anyone who wanted to spend money on a double didn't want EITHER a non0rimmed round OR an OU... it's just not nostaligic.

let's spin this another way...

*IF* you had a choice between, assuming the same dollars and quality fit and finish..

an OU in 458 win mag,

or (since the 458 was SUPPOSED to match the 470)
a SxS in 470 NE...

both for say, $xxxx us... which would YOU buy?
(same dollar figure)

BTW, I nearly bought the 458 O/U... figuring I would rechamber to a LOW PRESSURE 460W based wildcat... that would get me 2150/500 at 40,0000

then couldn't get one,

My 45-70 dupplication loads were in the Ruger category, with a moderate dose of H4227 pushing 300 grainiers 1850 fps. Boy, was that fun to shoot!

Antbody know what this rifle might be worth? CZ says they only sold 5 in the US.

Will they take the hot loads you can fire in the bolts?

Elk Castle gunstore in FT. Worth TX had a CZ 458.
They might still have it.
Sabot, shoot some factory 458's in you rifle, or
develop some factory ballistic loads and take it to Africa.
Just practice with it, shooting and reloading, a lot before you go.

450,
I called.. it was gone...

yes, fellas, I would have bought it for 2500-3000....

as 450 reminded me... while having a side by side is the best, ANY double is better than a bolt gun.

Yes, the CZ 589 is more than adequate for hot 458 win Mag loads. CZ says it is also improved to 458 Lott for about $85 per barrel.

Jeffeosso and others:

Please send me an email if interested in buying the CZ. I have no use for a double, and own a 416 Rem as well as a 375 RUM so it will probably never see any real action.

If it will shoot hot 458 win loads it is ready for Africa. IMHO.
