Food at DSC

So who else thinks the food at DSC convention was the worse they have ever had...

First time to go to the convention and we loved it, actually prefer it over SCI, however the food inside the show was god awfull, maybe something to change for all involved.

Actually I agree completely. It was the only thing that let it down for me.

I thought the prices had gone up and quality had gone down.

Last year they had fresh sushi and salads, (for the girls of course....) etc.

The smoothies were good but $9 for a shake is a bit much anywhere....

I understand DSC isn't the provider, but planning the providers a bit better will make a huge difference.

Its the same the whole world over - lease a catering job to an outsider and if you don't apply quality control to set the desired standard the results will be obvious.

DSC may have learnt from this mistake and if they are still in a position to penalize the caterers, so much the better - at least they may set a precedent for future events and for other potential aspirants to take heed of the foreseeable consequences.

There is nothing like overpriced and crappy food at that, to spoil an event!

If this is a numbers game then I'm in. My wife and I thought it was awful. The only way to get anything that was fit to eat was to go outside, e.g., the Omni. I heard this from many attendees.

The black cook who did the Oriental food was ok, the rest was cheap crap but priced too high.

I was determined not to eat that overpriced crap so I had protein bars and bottled water in my dsc bag, got by on that.

Too bad we can't get some of those food trucks that show up in various locations around our city, they serve great food.

I never eat that stuff, just skip lunch while I'm in the convention. I figure it won't hurt to miss a meal and I don't have to eat that garbage.

This year managed to escape eating any of the high priced crap.
But, it is the only thing about the show I don't like.

As I have "worked" and "attended" shows for many, many years, know exactly what to expect from this scenario. It was bad, but as I said knew in advance it would be. Sooooo took a couple of Wilderness Athlete Bars and a banana, and a water bottle each day in my pack and managed quite well.

I really don't think there is much DSC or any other Convention can do about this situation. It's simply the nature of the beast.

I would gladly fore go having any food at the show if we can get back to being able to enjoy an adult beverage while we walk around and visit. Very disconcerting to not be able to drink a beer unless you stayed in the alcohol time out area.

I believe, could be wrong, that certain areas/counties have laws against walking and drinking in public places. Don't think DSC would have much say in this since it would be a Govt. matter.

I'm very sure the outfitters would like to see the ban on alcohol lifted also.
In 2010 my wife drank 2 margaritas on an empty stomach & booked 2 African safaris for me.
Come to think of it, I want the damn ban lifted too!

The explanation I was given on the alcohol issue was that the restriction was imposed because the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission determined that the show was a "gun show". I would feel confident that the DSC officials will be working hard over the time between now and the next show to challenge that determination, or come up with some more reasoned restrictions that allow the show to fall out of the gun show characterization.

The alcohol issue was the only issue I had w/ the show. An exhibitor told me that all the guns at SCI and the SHOT show either have the firing pins removed or are somehow disabled. The guns at DSC are not. As the guns could be loaded and fired, alcohol was not allowed on the floor.

I know, it is stupid. You can walk in with a loaded concealed gun, but the show guns have to be disabled.

Hopefully DSC can fix this as it takes people off the floor and doesn't lubricate their wallets.

I'm sure the guns at SCI are not disabled. I would be incredibly surprised if all the English guns on show at any of the conventions are having the pins removed.

As for the bolt gun guys, I couldn't imagine having to disassemble all those bolts for the show to remove the firing pins.

Enjoyed the show very much. The only complaint I had was that you were unable to have a drink while walking around visiting with the different outfitters. If I were an exhibitor I would certainly not like this.

As for the alcohol issue, it is a TABC matter. I was involved in the discussions. No way DSC would have done this otherwise. DSC will explore all options with the TABC, I'm sure.

With regard to the food, what I had was passable, but as Larry Sellers said, it is convention hall food, over which DSC has no control. I don't plan on attending any post convention meetings but these comments will be passed along to the food vendor. Food trucks off convention grounds is a good suggestion.

I walked back to the Omni and ate in the bar at the right side of check in. They had a buffet that was $17.00 including drink. Also it was a bar. Saturday I noticed a couple of food trucks outside the Omni on the way back to the show.

that's the explanation i was given by the bartender. i know in the past it was not an issue.

I agree the food wasn't great and way over priced as was the beer. I hope they can do something to allow alcohol in the booths again, makes a totally different atmosphere..

I find it interesting that some folks feel the need to be drinking while walking around such a great venue as the DSC Show. Don't get me wrong, I truly enjoy a glass of fine wine with dinner or a sundowner around the fire in Africa. To me being in a alcohol induced stupor while trying to enjoy all the finery available at DSC and talking with the Exhibitors just seems strange. Probably just me, do as you like.

Some folks are able to actually exert a little self control and enjoy a beverage or two without sliding into an "alcohol induced stupor". Sheesh, some folks seem to have a view that everything in life is either black or white with no shades of gray.

I actually got in line at the food court Saturday about 1 o'clock and there were 20 people in front of me waiting to get a hot dog. I suddenly came to my senses, walked to the front of the hall, got stamped for reentry, caught a cab to El Fenix mexican food restaurant downtown, great food, service and drink and worth a 10 dollar cab ride for a break then right back on the floor of DSC to join the herds of people milling the aisles. Great show!

Idon't mind paying a high price for food if it is good but the DSC concession stuff if really horrid. Even if you stayed away from the burgers etc the pre made healthier sandwiches were really soggy. We went out to Morsels in the OMNI and the food carts which were great. I don't think a lot of folks got it that the food cartS were just outside the OMNI everyday. I hope they are there next year.
